the bead was off the seat completely. the auto inflate was putting air into the tire trying to reinflate it. after trying to get the bead to reseat i gave up and went to the tire shop.

All that work and the system was wanting to do the work for you!

Oneperfectrun - I will put in a plug for Hendrickson - some folks may have had issues with the old HTIS (newer version is the TireMaxx), but mine did great for years. Originally came with hard plastic hoses that didn't hold-up so well but Hendrickson sent me a full set of braided steel hoses at no charge.

We haven't had problems with ours either. I was worried about them like you because my dad's company had nothing but trouble with theirs before we got ours. I think they ended up scrapping them. I'm not sure what system they ran though.

Maybe it's best to just keep with the old system.

Check your tires, and use an air hose to fill them if needed.

I've hooked to trailers with a tire that had zero air pressure.
Got out the air hose and filled it, and usually no further problems.
I've wondered if the tire had lost all pressure between the time it was last dropped to the time I hooked to it, or if a driver or two simply never checked.

on occasion, yes. A lot of the 53' intermodal chassis have a PSI system, on a cfew occasions I've hooked to one at a customer, had a run-flat tire, that was fully inflated and seated by the time I got back to the rail.

No offense intended and to each his own, but I like the idea that this system takes care of the burden of checking and airing tires for you! And the warning light will alert you to tire being aired-up or even a situation where the inflation system can't keep a tire at proper pressure. Yes, it costs money to buy and it is not perfect, but I will continue to run one and would have a tractor system as well if they weren't so very expensive. Just one less hassle for me...

Are these systems adjustable to the amount of air pressure you want to run in your tires?

I pulled intermodal for a couple of years. I can't remember ever pulling a chassis with tubeless radial tires. I pulled very few 53's though. Those Chinese tube type tires got a smell all their own when hot!

if you rely on that light, your asking for trouble, most of them are inaccurate. The intermodal one's were mostly off by 15 psi for alerting to a problem. Pulled a brand new trailer from SLC to Denver a few years back with this system as well, it gave me a low tire light the entire trip.

yes, sort of. The intermodal PSI systems were set to 100 psi, but could be adjusted up/down. that said, unless you know what your doing with it, don't mess with it.
