Most violations for an ABS being on are 4 CSA points that do not count against the driver, only against the carriers CSA score. If the driver cuts the wire or disables the ABS light that will count on the drivers CSA. My company told us to note the defect for repair on the inspection sheet. This has worked for a couple of our drivers that have been stopped for the light being on.

Besides what has all been said... when you see the light and there is a problem the computer will disable the ABS system completely for the trailer. Which means the trailer brakes will lock down in an emergency situation causing a jack knife as the truck maintains traction and the trailer doesn't. It is also dangerous when you get on snow and ice when braking. Same thing the trailer will jack easier on you.
A good driver fixes his problems instead of ignoring them or pawning them off on someone else.Truckermania, Raiderfanatic, scottied67 and 2 others Thank this. -
scottied67 and peterd Thank this.

I've had my share. Most times they are a simple fix from splashed dirt. -

I've been given DOT tickets for more of these stupid ABS violations than I care to remember. NY loves them. Non functionin ABS system check, non functioning light on trailer blah blah blah. I finally solved it.
When I get a trailer with non functioning ABS, it will generally go through it's system self check, then the trailer ABS light will flash once and then stay on (it's supposed to flash once and go out). When you turn on the key, the truck sends power to the middle pin on the light cord. The middle pin powers the trailer ABS. I wired the middle pin to a spare toggle on the dash. When Barney asks me to key on so he can check the trailer ABS light, I turn the key on, wait a few seconds and then shut the toggle switch off. This cuts power to middle pin and the ABS light goes out just like it's suppose to.artek, adayrider, Dino soar and 1 other person Thank this. -

Good idea BUT ! The trailer ABS control box is mounted near the air tanks above the axles. It has a red L.E.D. that either blinks or is on solid with a failure . It's a ticket if Barney sees this just like 'ole yeller.
All vehicles made in the late '90's have some sort of ABS and it's required on '99 and up. It also has to function. Personally I don't like it....been driving too long.
Bottom line is it has to work if it's on the truck and or the truck was made with it.

Yes, a lot of times a bad ground will make it stay on also!

I will, however Data-Q that, as the regulation does not specify that an inop ABS is a violation, only that an inop lamp is a violation. The section cited on the inspection was 393.55(e). Never argue with the inspector. Smile, take the paperwork and be on your way.CAXPT Thanks this.
