I know when the Boss and I where deciding on a new truck, we where debating between the 389 with a 63" and a 388 with 70". We went with 388/70" bunk 244" wheelbase and we have plenty of room between the bunk and tank. Guess it all depends where they got the kingpin set on the trailers too. I've hooked onto a few spares where the pin is set back and the headers are snug to the back of bunk, then there ya are sliding your fifthwheel back.

I had a 244" wb, w900L with a 72" and with almost any train I pulled, I was over by a foot or more. I didn't really worry about it, but I figured the DOT officer wouldn't care if it was 2" or 2', overlength is overlength.
I had a 270" w900L with a 86 studio, LOL, that truck went thru 2-3 inspections at scales, and no one ever pulled the tape measure out. I did buy the SGI permit for the overlength truck, but never once got asked.
I do know that the scale at Slave Lake a few years back regularly measured us, we would go thru there daily, and they had the tape measure hanging on the wall ready to go.
