    hi,

I'm looking to buy another truck to put driver on since we haul for one customer and it pays good , but I would like to buy truck with some kind of protection because of used truck maintenance can be a nightmare in this business.

First i thought of leasing but that was too expensive about $3000 a month with full maintenance for the miles that we drive monthly roughly 2000 to 2500 miles, and that' alot and i wouldn't make any money by going this route.

-Now i'm thinking to buy a used truck with around 400k miles but with warranty. I would like to know Is used truck warranty any good, I heard mixed stories about it that if truck breaks down the dealer can take up to 2-3 weeks to fix the truck which is under warranty and all the downtime is not worthit.

I do understand that before buying truck i'll dyno it and possibly oil sample to assure that engine is good.

-Also which warranty to get or from which dealer if anyone has had good experience with some particular warranty and can share where to get the best deal. I want atleast 2-3 years of warranty that covers atleast the main parts, Engine, Trans, trubo ,rears etc and shop doesn't take too much time just because it's under warranty....

-I read some good stuff about Prem 2000 here , but i have no experience
    -Select warranty seems junk

read the fine lines see who covers what. i bought a 99 classic years ago with a fresh inframe under warranty 6 months later it blew and it was a total nightmare. i had to pay out of pocket to get it back up and running and spent the better part of a year trying to get it back....also check to see what is required of you. some will not honor it if you do your own maintance like oil changes rear end changes and checks. i have seen them where they require a shop to check everything every 10000 miles and for the shop to do all the work. even things like wheel seals adjusting brakes and clutch....its crazy

A used truck extended warranty is a waste of money>as mentioned read the fine print on the contract.

Not sure what used truck warranty you have had Ralph, but I just had $7,846.35 worth of work done today and I paid $138.91 for shop supplies. So I got my 1900.00 I paid for the warranty back plus some...so I didn't see any waste of money. I wouldn't buy a truck you know nothing about without a warranty...just my opinion!

I spent the money on a Selectrucks Warranty once....as everyone else says read the fine print. If it is an item that "wears" out like a clutch it isnt covered. Back then I was too dumb to figure that out before shelling out the money for the warranty. As most of us on here "get it" I think there are some pretty good deals on used equipment these days if you look around. With that being said I also learned that the first 500,000 miles the truck pays you, the second 500,000 you pay the truck.

Ya but if clutch wears out ,it's understandable because it wore out over time. I want to buy warranty to protect if something uknown happens to engine/injector , transmission.
Any truck over 500k parts will wear out and we will just have to keep eye on things.

If you check out the truck before buying it, I don't see much value in a warranty. Truck warranties are expensive and don't always cover things that break. Even a new truck warranty may not cover everything. None will cover the tow bill unless you have it in an insurance policy. I have bought a number of trucks and never purchased a warranty. I only had a major problem with one truck. I did have a problem with another when it dropped a couple of lifters right after the warranty ran out. That cost me almost $7,000. You would be better off saving the warranty money for repairs rather than paying a warranty company. Had the extended warranty been purchased on the truck that dropped the lifters, it would have been covered. But, the warranty would have cost an additional $4,500. The overhaul was $18,000. If you get a truck with fewer than $500,000, there should be some warranty left from the factory.

I just ran a maintenance report on my truck I bought in July 2012. $12400. None of it would have been covered by warranty. The big ticket items we exhaust man, kingpins and steers, APU repairs like motor mounts, broken wires etc, bunker, trailer tires.

The rest of it is tools, lightbulbs and misc stuff.
