I'm getting low voltage to actuator #3 and #5 and the wire harness doesn't look to great. Does is the vva harness separate or is it all one harness in the head ?

Don't quote me on this for sure, but I believe it is all one harness with the injectors and jakes, I had mine replaced when the motor was overhauled, don't remember how much the harness was, but it was alot less than I thought it would be.

One thing that might also be your problem is the connection on the side of the head, those harnesses over time let oil into the connection, you can unplug it and spray some electrical cleaner in there and see if that helps. Either way I would replace the harness inside the head and clean connections on outside engine harness.

These engines have two harnesses under the valve cover, one for the cylinders 1,2,3 and one for cylinders 4,5,6. Each harness has injector, jake and IVA. So depending on which cylinders, in you case 3 and 5, you may need both harnesses. You probably have a rubbed wire somewhere in the head. Also check IVA connectors, the get brittle from the heat and oil. Here's the parts numbers for the harnessesFront harness 229-7365Rear harness 229-7366

You may want to call cat and get the part# for your engine serial#. I have a BXS and show 255-4533 for one at $154.82 and the other is 255-4534 at $137.13.

it's a no brainer to just replace both instead of one while your in there.

Thanks everyone. Will be getting both them from cat on Monday. How long does it take to pull cover and replace?

You'll have to pull the valve cover base off of the head to change the harnesses. Not a hard job at all - just a little time consuming.

Ok I replaced the harness today but now I've got a new issue. When I started it back up it smoked black and ran rough. Found out if I unhook the front wire harness it will clear up so next I unhooked the front injectors one at a time but it didn't change anything. I'm guessing that it has to do with injectors but need some ideas if anyone has one. Will be able to get pro-link and see what codes are throwing Monday
