Can you go from Edmonton to Hinton and then from Hinton to Grande Cache, AB via Rte 40 without chaining up in this weather? If they clean the roads really well can it be done? How much sand do they drop on the inclines? What grade are the steepest grades? Is chaining mandatory? Are there many places to pull over? Any runaway truck ramps? Roads icy or snow packed? Thx, CZ

Yes you can take that road, but once your on it, your on it all the way. I don't remember a hill steep enough where you have to chain up, because there is no place to stop. Last time I was on that road was in 06. Things may have changed by now I don't know. Don't freak out about it. Oh I just noticed your from TX. Ok time to freak out. LOL

I forgot to ask. If your so scared of snow and ice why are you coming up here? Just wondering is all. BTW this time of year almost all of Canada is covered in snow and ice.

The only large grade is leaving Grande Cache going to Grand Prairie.

Follow the weather reports when travelling and use common sense. Have chains with you and know how to use them.

Hwy 40 has a few grades going into GC, but mostly going up not down.

They use a sand/salt mix on the road. Snow clearing is done after the snowfall, not during.

There are pull outs on the highway, but not many. There is no shoulder on most of the highway.

Drive according to conditions and you will be fine. Have driven that highway numerous times and only cancelled my trip once this year due to road and weather conditions. Chained up once due to black ice going down the grades.

No runaway truck ramps. Roads were clear yesterday, today is snowing.

But on a nice day I will say its a beautifull drive with the scenery.

I would be more worried about the wildlife not the road.

Edmonton to Hinton is Hwy 16. Hinton to Grande Cache is Hwy 40.

He is driving up from Texas to Canada, does he now what drive according to conditions means? For us it's easy, for someone from the south maybe not.

Your in for an interesting drive lol. And there are some good grades climbing out of Hinton. If it was me I'd wait till tomorrow to head up that way. Supposed to be better weather.

For the record, I am not from TX. I am actually from Vermont so yes I am used to snow and ice driving, just nit much through the Canadian mountains. Just trying to get a feel for it. Going from Gr Prairie to Edmonton I slipped going up some of the grades so I am wondering how bad it will be going 40 to GC. Thanks to all you guys for helping me out.

It is 120 km and 2+ hours longer to go from GP to Edmonton via HWY 40. It is a two-lane, undivided highway with no shoulders for most of it (the ATS driver, among others, yesterday, no doubt wishes he had found a shoulder rather than the ditch... that's going to be an expensive tow).
