Shawn, my first ruck was a select truck full warranties, didn't have the 60 day bumper to bumper like they do today. o1 fld120, 470det. 425k on it. 200k on engine, drive train and 100k on hanger components. The warranties cost me 4300 and the first year 7600 in hanger components no major engine problems. I'm talking Turbo, oil cooler, front hub, fan clutch, air to air, compressor etc....Now my second truck 05 fld132xl 360k 515det egr. spent 6800 on warranties. Within the first 60 days ihad, air dryer, injector, injector harness, vpod, and turbo auctuator. all covered, but that's all that went wrong. So this time around it cost me more in warranties than repairs not much more. It's a grap shoot. I have never had a major engine or drivetrain that I didn't cause. See if you can double down on the hanger components. By the way select trucks again sold me my second. Dealer in cleveland hooked me up. Even stood by some small seal issues. Truck sat for a year in a half. Wheel seals dry out and rear seals. I think it's more peace of mind.

Shawn forgot to tell you, check with your insurance company about road side assistance. Generally costs 300/yr for us. Your employee can call them instead of you in the middle of the night, you know wht I mean? Generally with that policy they cover first 5o miles towing free. Tire blown, belts hoses, freeze up, jump start, and a pull out of that snow bank that dot plowed you in.
-
Thanks jseney, I'll check with my insurance on Monday because towing can be $500 even for few miles to shop or TA/petro. $300 a year is not bad for adding on towing. -
if you decide to buy an aftermarket warranty just call them and ask what the maintenance requirements are for them to honor warranty..i have premium 2000 they require 15000 mile pms..trans and rear ends need to have the fluid changed within the first 12 months of purchase and 250000 there after..also keep all receipts for maintenance and repairs because they will try and weasel there way out of paying if possible
shawn_ca Thanks this. -
I'm going to check truck this week and Detroit diesel is a block away from the dealer. I will ask dealer that i'll take a truck there for dyno.
What do i need to look for in dyno , will the person doing the dyno will be able to tell me if it's good or bad ?
What if the dealer offers to dyno at his shop ,i'm thinking then the mechanic there will not tell me for any problems
Also what oils i need to get for oil analysis. I'm thinking Engine oil ,trans oil... Do i need coolant analysis as well ? -
get engine, coolant samples.
have them print out the DDEC report out of detroit. Some of the aftermarket software won't print it out.
Just have them run it up on the dyno for a regular check. It will tell you how it's performing.
I would also ask them to do the Cylinder Contribution test as well. This will tell you how the compression compares across all the cylinders.shawn_ca Thanks this. -
sry im new. whats dyno?
-
So Detroit have DDEC report ,
What about if cummins motor , then there would be a different kind of report from the dyno ? -
I think your best bet would be to google it and get basic understanding , In overall dyno checks power ,trip, rpm engine ,blow by to see how they perform.

This is a chassis dyno. It will give you an idea what power you are putting to the ground.
