I am sure these questions have been asked somewhere on this sight but I can't find any anywhere, and yes I did search. Okay, say I live in WI and find a truck in IA and I buy it. I am assuming that I can drive it back home before it gets plates on it, but what would be the steps to get plates and such? I know this sounds stupid but I really don't know. I will be leasing my truck to a company but I was told to get my own plates. Any help would be appreciated.

Told to get your own plate? Usually if a company supplies the plate its easier than plating your own tractor. The dealer will issue you a temp tag, and youll need at least bob tail before the truck can leave the lot. I dont know much about WI but its usually just taking the truck down titling it at the dmv, and then plating the truck might have to go to the actual motor carrier division to get your plate but every state is different. Or you can call a place like the ooida and have them mess with everything. Also youll need a 2290 before they can plate it. Its prorated on your july to july and is $550 for 80k+ for 12 months.

i got to thinkin, it might be better to get the plates through the company i will be leasing to. They said its 1800 bucks and they take a small amount out of each settlement until they are paid. Because i am just starting out as an O/O, perhaps it would be beter to do that until i get my "sea legs" under me. There is a lot to learn fer sure. I am contemplating in 3 or 4 years getting my own authority. Perhaps i should just learn first.

If i could do it over again thats what i would do. Im under my own authority and it can be a headache at times pay is a little better but theres a lot more to pay for and theres a lot more responsibility. A payment plan is definitely a good way to start out especially if youll be on weekly settlements it aint nothing to run up a few grand in fuel a week and i imagine the base plate is $30/week or something like that. Good luck partner and keep us up to date on how its going for you!

I see it very helpful. I'm leased to a company and when I started there they provided me with much cheaper bobtail ins, cheaper plates, comdata fuel card. Pretty much after a week the deducted all that stuff from the settlement and wrote me a check for what was left over. I didn't have to put nothing up front and I think that is convenient.

Here is another question. When I get my truck, I am driving it to my mechanic so he can go through it and fix anything that needs it before I take it out on the road. Can I assume that all I will need is bobtail insurance to do that? I won't have plates at that point so will that be a problem with the DOT? I am guessing that I will be able to bobtail it home before I get plates as long as I have insurance.

I have to say, I am pretty stoked about getting my own truck! The first one might not be brand new, but it will be mine!

I think it might be the same as if u would be buying a car, u might need to have insurance but as far as plates u might have 24hours to get them from the time of purchase. Now, my buddy bought a truck not long ago and he had insurance and temp plates already purchased, when he drove home he got pulled over and was asked where r his signs dot# and icc#. Well since he had his plates and ins he only got away with a warning for not having dot and icc# displayed on his truck. hope that helps
