350 Cummins can be punched and bored out, rebuilt to 500 hp

So what I am hearing is don't be afraid to buy older. But my question is how old is too old? I was told that when a truck gets up around 800,000 miles that is when things begin to break. Or is that not the case????

Check out the penske truck sales website. They have trucks priced in the 25k plus range with lower than 800,000. http://www.penskeusedtrucks.com/search-inventory.html They also include the maintanence records. Just search for semi tractors on the webpage.

N14 is one of the best engines ever made. Why don't you like it? I would agree with the others , go with a Detroit over a Volvo any day of the week. Still if it were me I would take the N14 over either of those choices.
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
the truck i have driven for the last 4 years is a 98 Freightliner with the N14. It has 900 thousand and some change and the mechanics think there is water in one or more of the cyl. I drive it like it is mine so perhaps in the years prior it wasn't driven and maintained that well. The volvo that i was looking at is an 05' with the cummins ISX 400 with 700,00 miles. The Detroits we have seem to have less problems. But I have to admit I go back and forth

actually I have been on penske's website. Perhaps i need to go back there.

Detroit has the the longest estimated service life of any motor and the lowest cost of ownership.

I did call Cummins and ask them about the ISX motors. The guy that i talked with said that the 400church was a pretty god motor but the bigger ISX motors have problems.

I understand about the N14 now. I have done much checking on motors and what year is best and this sight has been most helpful fer sure. The one I drive for work is a '98 Freightliner with the N14 in it. The boss just put a reman in it. When I went to pick it up from Cummins I asked the Supervisor there what he thought about the various motors. His comment to me was that if it was him getting a truck, he would get either a new one and get every warranty he could possibly put on the truck or a 2003 or older and put money into it and drive it until it couldn't be driven anymore or until they changed the laws so it couldn't be driven. He said the motors are not the problem. They all have their benefits and drawbacks. The problem is the emission garbage they put on them. He pointed through the window of his office toward the shop and said see all these trucks here? None of them are here because of the motors, they are all here because of emissions and each one is going to cost a minimum of $12,000. I found that both enlightening and interesting. That N14 reman in my truck is a sweet motor. But I supposed they are all sweet when they are new. It sounds "pretty".
