These numbers are based on 2012 lease perchance hand book, all numbers are subject to change.

    2012 Cascadia Weekly Fixed Expensives
    -———————------------------------

    Truck Payment: $542

    Collision insurance: $63.25

    Bobtail insurance: $5.77

    Occ/Acc insurance: $32.31

    Qual com rental: $20.00

    Heavy Highway Tax: $15.00

Maintenance account: $.10 added on @ end of settlement
    ------------------------------------------
    Subtotal: $678.33

The above is a very rough estimate of my fixed weekly expenditures that the company requires. Add roughly + 20$ for prepass and other cheap misc.

Now what is troubling me is the fuel surcharges. Below is my math on fuel + an estimated weekly paycheck. I will be conservative with the FSC. Will also be assuming that there are no empty miles (or very low and won't impact the end results by much)

    Trip 1
    Total miles: 833 (paid miles)
    FSC: .25c
Truck miles per gallon: 6.5 (going 65 mph)
    National diesel price: 3.895

Please correct me if my math is wrong here or if I am leaving something out.

    833 / 6.5 = 128 gallons need for trip.

    833 x .25 = $208.25 (FSC)

    128 x 3.895 =. $498.56 Total fuel cost without FSC (apx)

498.56-208.25= $290.31 Total fuel cost with FSC

    833 x .92 = $ 766.36

    766.36 - 290.31 = $476.05 gross profit ( before I take out for taxes)

Now if I do this trip two more times my total settlement for the week (before swifts cut)

    $1428.15 gross income for week

$1428.15 -678.33 = $749.82 income for the week after everything is paid for.

Again this is a rough estimate, and I do not know the FSC this week for Swift. If I am missing anything, or if my math is wrong please share your experience. I would be most grateful.

FSC is less than half of what they should be paying, IMO. $0.42-0.46 is the going rate.

Your maintenance deduction is about half of what you should be withholding. I'm assuming that the truck is under warranty, so a $5K cash reserve would probably be sufficient . Figure $0.20 / mile if you don't have that cash reserve. You'll be glad you have it when you pop that steer tire after running over the lumber that fell off the truck in front of you.

Have you figured out how you're going to cover the fixed costs plus your hotel expenses and food when the truck's in the shop for a week for any possible warranty repairs? Who pays for the tow?

What if you get sick and can't drive for a few days? What about home time, how will you pay your fixed costs?

    Does Swift pay for tolls?

Things to think about. A few $$ here and there can leave you with less than nothing.

Using your numbers $749.82- 249.90(.10 per mile maintenance)=499.92. And the 476.05 is NET not gross. Also I hope your WAAAAY off on FSC I'm leased to a tanker outfit and get paid %. On dedicated loads they charge the customer $3.30 average per "loaded" mile, and I get a % of that, my FSC this week was 27% of the gross, 3.30x27%=.89 cpm FSC, now before everyone gets excited I said dedicated, only pays one way I have to bring empty trailer back to customer. That being said you have to divide ALL my #'s by 2 to make a fair comparison, so MY FSC on YOUR load IF it was 833 mi. one way, and dedicated would be .44 cpm, still over twice what your figuring. By your own admission the FSC is troubling you, I think you may have misunderstood the FSC program there.(I hope they are not stealing FSC $)

My take home last week was 1098.00 I grossed 1390.00 this was for 6 days, I don't get why drivers sign these deals that do not make sense. Check out JCT and Prime to compare. I know there are driver that make more than I do, so I'm not throwing stones just curious.
Also do you get to walk away with the truck at the end of the lease, I JCT drivers get the truck its there, don't know about Swift.

Thank you for the response! As far as the numbers I was kinda doing the worst case situation, and a rough draft. With your suggestions and the other replys (for example the one who gave me the l/o FSC) ill be able to calculate much better.

I am also under the impression that the truck comes with a drive train warranty plus a X amount of time that if some thing breaks Swift pickup the table (the grace period). Ill be coming into with about a 3-4k buffer saved. Not as much as I would like.

Again thank you for the info!

I was being very conservative with the FSC. Sense I didn't know it (now I do) I didnt want to kid myself and assume anything. However, I did assume with the current diesel avg of 3.895 that .25 would be near the end of the spectrum for making money (which I would still make enough not to starve and pay my home bills at the above numbers).

Also I think I have a handle on their FSC program. "FSC paid on all loaded miles" unless I am missing something that is pretty straight forward. (I could be, haha, I don't claim I know anything )

    thank you for your reply!

Which brings up another good point. Who pays for empty miles, or miles driven while trying to locate an MT?

Once you figure out what your per-mile operating cost is, you'll discover that what they're paying doesn't quite cover your costs.
