Instead of a posting inside or maybe along with that. Put a large easy to read sign at the truck exit of the Pilot.

Maybe spend some of that police enforcement money on two large, conspicuous signs. First one just past the freeway going towards the industrial area "no thru trucks." Then an even bigger one "no trucks 1/2 mi" where the last safe place or three to turn around is less than 1/2 mi. Maybe hang some flashing yellow lights on it so the reader knows they really mean it.
Meltom, bullhaulerswife and cowboy_tech Thank this. -
til there is adequate signage warning trucks beforehand they they are expected to avoid the road, more blame rests on the government than on the truck drivers. of course, youll always have scofflaws, and im not defending them...like carrkool said, hes "taking a gamble", and if he gets caught, he probably wouldnt be ranting about the unfairness of the ticket. but especially near a chain truck stop, you will have many, many drivers who are completely unfamiliar with the area. if they arent warned by their atlas (because they have an older one, and yes that becomes more and more their fault as the years go by), and they arent warned by signs because the idiot planners DIDNT BOTHER TO PUT UP ADEQUATE SIGNAGE, then the fault lies with the planners/government.bullhaulerswife and cowboy_tech Thank this. -
I would guess that once a driver sees the truck restriction there is no turn around. Its alot easier to turn a car around then a truck.red light cameras are used for revenue collection. If that road is not listed as a restricted road in atlas Im sure I would go on it too.Putting signs up in the industrial area like trucks no right turn restricted road.would help

Pokerhound - totally agree. The signs at this road are poorly placed and there is no turn or 'out' available for a trucker once they have noticed the signs. No warning sings beforehand. As I said earlier VDOT has recently put up those huge portable flashing signs, but I imagine they are temporary. Even the one placed at the north end of the road is placed too late. What's a trucker to do when they see that...slam on their brakes and back up??? Not doable on this stretch of road. Talk about accident potential! Maybe VDOT has a more permanent plan in mind. I will be asking them questions too, as part of my research.
Redforeman - I like your ideas and have thought of the permenent flashing sign as a warning. Would be a lot cheaper than a 'redlight camera'. My teacher wants part of the paper to be about having to convince the opposing side of my solution, so she is assuming that the solution will be controversial and have an opposing group. I can't imagine truckers would have anything against better signs to help them navigate restricted roads, but the 'redlight camera' would be more controversial as I know from researching there are many who see them as an invasion of privacy and a money making scam - so, although I know it probably wouldn't be the best solution, I've got to include it in my proposal!

nah...redlight cameras serve a purpose. im no fan of government intrusion, but im also a realist. if trucks on this road present a real danger to other traffic, it should be restricted, and the restriction should be enforced. redlight cameras are one way of enforcing, and id have no issue with them here. the issue id have is the government taking THAT action alone, and doing nothing about making the warning of the restriction clear. at that point its obvious that they are more interested in generating revenue than in promoting safety. i dont WANT to be on a road thats restricted, and i certainly dont want to put other traffic at risk unnecessarily by my presence on a road not designed for my truck. but you (the government/planners) have a duty to warn me about it BEFORE i am halfway through a turn that puts me on the restricted road. especially when it endangers me and others. have some respect for my life and the lives of your schoolchildren you claim to care about (again, speaking to the government).
sorry if ive diverted from your intent of this post...just ticks me off when poor planning on someone else's part gets me into a situation id rather not have been in. -
poor planning?if trucks are on that road and it is not listed in the atlas as restricted and the signs are not clearly visable how do you call that poor planning?we have one of those roads in our community that gps has trucks taking.although law enforcement hasnt enforced it,what they did was let the businesses that the trucks are going to post signs letting drivers be aware of possible consequences.the only drivers I ever see on them is the ones who cant read english

If road is that bad, then the buses should go around too. They are pretty long as well for those tight turns you mention correct. The safety of kids should also be in your report so that they don't go that route too. Anything bigger than a reg. vehicle go around. Just a thought. Maybe signs at the truckstop saying no trucks to the right or left which ever it maybe. Put in a low clearance bar across the roadway mark with signs and that will stop them. Just a thought, good luck!
