Hello Ladies & Gents. I'm obviously new around here, but I've been lurking a good bit. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help noobs like myself (Had my CDL for 2 weeks). Also a thank you to all the comedians out there too... I have learned a lot from all of y'all- different aspects about the trucking culture, safety and technical advice, and to not take things personally when a person or company takes a dump on your day, it's just part of the game.
I am now in great health, but a little over a year ago, I had Spinal Fusion performed on L5-S1. Before my surgery, I was in a very bad way, I had practically no mobility without excruciating pain, due to nerve compression that was going on. Now, I am a new man. I am back to 90%+ what I was before I junked my back. I am able to surf again, and I can hike, camp, and go fly-fishing in the mountians comfortably again. I know I am a success story that is very rare after this type of surgery. Most people never are able to live a "normal" life again. My dilema is such- I am limited to lifting 50lbs. nor can I bend over and touch my toes without bending my knees. When I had my DOT Physical before I got my CDL, the Doc said it wouldn't be a problem since you're not really supposed to bend at your waist to lift things anyway, and I could get into the tight spaces under a truck necessary to perform the job. I know these limitations disqualifies me from working with skateboards because of the weight of the tarps (McElroy says theirs weigh 115lbs!).
Can anyone suggest any decent companies that I may be able to get into that won't require the flexibility of a Yoga Instructor for the physical or excessive unloading practices? BTW, I know this has been discussed somewhere on here before, I searched. But each case is different. I have seen the video that Schneider has on Youtube about their physical, I could definitely pass that. I'm just concerned about lifting heavier weights. Thanks again for checking this out and for any advice.

I'll give you my opinion from my experience & hopefully others can give better advice:

Tanker work : basically, hook up a hose & turn a pump on.

Team West Coast turns : mostly driving & sleeper berth - check Buel Inc. - in a tight situation there are 2 of you to help out. You can try this for a few months at least to get some OTR time on record.

That is solid advice. Thanks! I'm hitting the DMV this week to finish getting the Tanker, HazMat, and TWIC. My only concern with teams, is actually getting along with the other driver... But if the money is good, which I hear team driving is, it'll prob be worth it. Thanks again!

Google : South Carolina intermodal companies. All drop & hook.

Yes, I tried the teams in the beginning and didn't like it & didn't do it but maybe 2 or 3 months. The positive was I got longer runs and could document coast to coast experience.
