Deciding between Millis and Mcelroy

flatbed GENERALLY pays more than van. of course, there is still quite a large range of pay out there, and they overlap. in other words, no one could honestly tell you that no matter where you go you will definitely make more doing flatbed than any company doing van. ive heard many good things about millis, both here and from drivers in person. millis' school will cost you 1 year of contractual obligation driving for them, and at $25 per week taken out of your pay during that year will cost you a total of $1300. as most companies will also pay tuition reimbursement if you go to a private school, this translates to an ACTUAL cost of $2500. still quite competitive, but look around and see if you can do better. i think that MOST schools run somewhere in the $4k range (if you paid $4k for private school, when comparing to millis your ACTUAL cost after a year of tuition reimbursement would most likely be $2800), but if you can get govt help maybe you can get a far better deal than that. millis' reputation says they are a good choice...dont know anything about mcelroy.

 

I've never heard of Mills, but I just got invited to orientation at Mcelroy and I'm looking forward to it. Money wasn't my concern the first year as I am just wanting to get that 1st year out of the way which I heard is the hardest. I've done alot of research on Mcelroy and 90% of it is positive. I went to a private school and choosing Mcelroy over a company close to home that was gonna reimburse me for tuition but only pay .33 per mile flatbed, where Mcelroy says they start at .40 along with the great benefits from what I've seen and heard. Birmingham is good flatbed country. McElroy, Boyd Bros., Melton Truck Lines all work out of there.

 

Ive been to mcelroys 1st week orientation. This was back in 08. They paid so much a week during training. There was an agility test, not much though. They did start you at. 38/mile and you got a 2 cent raise within a year. I have a friend who still drives for them. Flatbed can be slow during this time of year or at least for them. They normally haul building products (sheetrock, lumber, shingles, ect.). They are christian based 7 th day adventists. They can be alittle strict also.

 

I live not to far from Birmingham in oxford and have been with millis almost 2 years and never had a problem with getting home. Plenty of freight in that area. I stay out 3 weeks and home 4 1/2.

 

I know you do get home every weekend with McElroy. They do offer frieght for the weekend if you volunteer and if they have it. They are a good company for the most part.

 

Oxford? I bet you go to Eastabogga quite a bit.

L.B. how close to a terminal do you have to be located in order to go regional? and what terminals offer it? I'm just curious and just starting out .. but never know.
