Enjoy the threads, most are informative. I'm 54 years old, been in industrial sand blasting most of my life, last 3 years as a foreman, but I am completely burnt on the profession. Been kicking around the idea of truck driving, at this point it's just thinking about it. I know they run you through a criminal check, I have had 2 DUIs, and a simple possession charge...all over 20 years ago, how would this effect my chances of getting on? Thanks in advance.

There are some companies that will hire you. Go to a good CDL school. Make sure your blood pressure & sugar levels are good for the DOT physical. Be accurate on the applications so nothing comes back to haunt you. Don't make any cold calls to trucking companies, just go through the application process with the CDL school, either online or paper applications. Many companies are self-insured and will bend their own rules.

Over 20 years?
None of that should affect you then. I believe the cutoff is 10 years. -
the cutoff is 10 years. for insurance purposes.
but since you got some time on your hands. this would be a very good time to get that criminal record expunged. find your local criminal backgrounds office. go submit your fingerprints and they'll tell you what to do to clean your arse up.DedHedEd Thanks this. -
That probably is so long ago it won't show up. Your application only wants ten years back, I not positive but think your mvr won't go that far back. Even if you do hazmat and TWIC the fingerprint background check doesn't even go that far back.

When you are given a job with a position of Trust (Household Movers, High Value Loads, etc), Its a lifetime reporting. -
Your best bet is to call around to some different companies before signing up for any type of schooling. Stick with the smaller companies they will be more forgiving. Whatever you do don't ask a school recruiter. They will most likely tell you that your record is fine then take your money. Once you finish school you will be on your own and may not be able to get hired.

Thanks so much for the replies. I have a short list of company's I'm going to call Monday, first on the list I think will be Millis Transport as they have their own driving school. This is a huge deal for me, 54 years old with a wife to support, so the info I receive here will be invaluable.
I guess my second question, and one of great import is the pay. I know that in school, training, etc, the pay will not be great. I currently clear $650.00 wkly, which is what is needed to pay the bills, my question is after getting my own truck..and preferably running regional would I be able to match that, course I would like to make more, but that number is a must for meeting my obligations...Once again, thanks.
