One of the big reasons Ive found drivers becoming O/Os is they do not want a company dictating to them when they can go home. As I do my research I know getting home is an important part of owning my own truck. So Im wondering O/Os how long do you stay on the road? Is it possible to make a living and get home often? Id like to plan on anywhere from 6-10 days out and back home. Not sure if its possible. I know there are a lot of variables so even if you could just let me know how long your trips are and I can come to an average.

I try to limit my time working to 19 days per month.

I might work a 9 day week, then a 10 day, or broken up some how.

It depends on the frieght. Spring-fall (flatbed) I can make more than enough to keep the business up and running, support the family, and have money to spend when I want to spend it. Winter rolls around and it seems like I have to be out more to make money, usually 2-3 days and then home for a day and then back out. It's all in how you route and how you plan your trips. Winter brings more headache with bad weather and tarping so it slows me down a lot too. summer I can turn 2 loads a day but If i run down to wichita in the winter I usually end up booking something going up north and stopping at the house for the night instead of a truckstop sleep at home finish the trip in the morning and do it all over again the next day. Just depends on what part of the industry you want to be in and your frieght lanes. Lot of guys don't like the short loads but I'd take making a little less and seeing my family, over running all over the country for a few weeks at a time.

10 1/2 - 11 months at a time, then take 6 weeks off in winter.

Im hoping to run flatbed under my own authority. I keep reading how bad freight is in Florida so Im not sure how easy it would be to get back home.

This sounds like a great plan Ill be retireing from another job and getting back into driving so the plan is to invest the pension check and earn a living on the road. But the fear is having to stay out for weeks at a time. Id like to get home often.

Thanks to everyone for their posts!!!
