I had to wade through 3 ft deep water in a downpour once to get to the shipping office because they were closing in an hour.

or foot deep mud in Houston pipe yard 40° and 40 mph wind and rain pouring down strap and tarp load.

NC load of cardboard boxes on pallets gotta be tarped, loaded in the downpour, soaked to my undies.

Makes ya long for 100° and dry dusty lot choking on limestone dust and sweating like a horse.

Just some of my more memorable loading situations.

If your getting into the flat bedding world remember this: You will freeze somedays and nearly pass out from heat exhaustion the next. DOT will always see what you have on the trailer and this makes you an easy target for insecure loads. Make sure you know what the actual rules are and do not rely on what the friendly trucker at the last stop told you, he may have it right but it never hurts to check. I always have at least 50% more straps chains than I need, all rated with tags and stamps. One other thing you will be dirty after every load you pick up or drop off regardless if you have coveralls.
Basically you have to be a thinking man/woman many problems in regards to getting your freight on the truck and securing it as well as keeping it there. Driving is also something that takes more thinking that general van freight. You rely on the stuff on the deck to be held there by straps and chains. If these get loose and you take a corner to fast....well you get the idea.

If you ever get out traping, you'll find out if your in decent shape. And it might be the hardest 5 mile walk you've ever done too!
