Sounds like a lack of a 3 D fix. Can happen if the unit can't see enough satelights so all you get is 2d fix- lat/long and no vertical data. Not sure but think you need a fix on at least four sats for a 3D fix.

I have two Garmins one is a bigger screen, life long update and about 2 years old,i do not remember the model on any,(if it is important i can retrieve the model numbers)but it was for my four wheeler and did not work to good at driving truck for me.
Then when i was driving truck i bought one at the J for truck and four wheeler. What really angers me with them is you can be in a spot and know full well how to get there and the fastest way,and no matter how you set it it will take you some stupid roundabout way,car or truck mode.i have tested it.
Also you would think if you been to your #### house more then one time it would maybe remember the route you drive.I.E lets say i need to get out of some area in MPLS.i live in the country 45 minutes south of MPLS,and i set it for home to help be get on my way, but for get to shut cancel route,it will tell me to turn around and want me to go back track 1 mile then go west one mile the back south to get home, but cant figure out if it would let me go forward 1 mile then make a right i would be almost home.
It should be able to remember your route you travel daily, that would help.
When your in Gary IN, OR ANY TOWN for safety sake DO NOT EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER TAKE ME DOWN TO THE GHETTO AGAIN unless i want to go ,it was #### horrible 11 at night dark as "F", and i am in the ghetto of gary. i am in some area following ol garmin, next thing i know some other rig pull in front of me,and then stop after about a mile, and get out an ask where are we i say no idea just following you now. turns out he had the same #### Garmin as me.he stayed parked i was blocking the road in an intersection so i left an took the lead. and he followed me i made a left turn and then things did not look right an i stopped and he pulls up to me and i told him i will use my phone to get use out of there, and my HTC one S phone got use to the truck stop.
while Garmin wanted to take me sight seeing yet. not sure why, it was dark out couldn't see to much anyway.
Out in SD i for the heck of it used both my old garmin and new garmin, and had them both running for the same address, no worry about truck route or anything , but i got to a T in the road and one told me to go left the other said right iam like WOW.
I would ask for more accuracy, and strive for no more mess ups.and make the dang thing work with my stereo so it can blue tooth over my speakers while some tunes are playing, like in a lower volume in the back ground tell me to take a left. and the voices you can choose to navigate you, get more real like. And make the price more reachable i cant believe companys cant figure out if they make the product REACHABLE FOR EVERYONE they will sell more and not to just a select crowd, cuz i can bet they only cost about 25 to make in china anyway. -

OH and my garmin truck one only being from july- 12 I am not sure why my screen is all gray an no color no more. I can honestly tell you i will think twice about buying a garmin again. cuz my phone is honestly way better. And i even have sat images of the land from google earth, unlike garmin,it should have satellite image. BUT Garmin cant compete,Is that why your here picking our brains?

Wyoming on I25 however.....comming out of a couple rest areas. Looks like map issues. It froze cause the map did not fit the actually ramp. It was very easy to unfreeze-same fix as above. It froze because it could not route the way the ramps actually were.
Just goes to show nothing is perfect but Garmin seems committed to thier Dezl line of PNDs so hopefully we'll see some fixes pretty quick. As I said we need to get on thier backs and ram these issues home. All well and good to yell about crap here but it does no good if we don't get on Garmin's customer service's butt regarding these issues. So far at least, no hardware issues so these things ought to be easily handled by software updates. I think map updates are quarterly so be a little bit to see what was fixed in that regard.
