We don't do this micro-managing where i work and what it costs us in fuel, it pays us in happy drivers. We have had one driver quit in the last 5 years and that was two weeks ago. He's back with us and loading out today. When it comes to fuel, I scout out where our discounts are at and advise them. When i'm driving I use fuelbook on my iphone. I also use google maps, specifically the actual street view as if you were standing in that exact spot and can look 360*. I have a free application that shows me where the weather is at. I google "traffic conditions" for any city I have to consider going thru. And you can forget about Banning, Tehachapi, and all the rest out there.

But the most important part about trip planning, the way I see it, is to have 3inches of logs in your truck and one for any scenario you might encounter.

The second most important part of trip planning: communicate as directly as you can with the people you will be picking up from, or delivering to. Don't let a dispatcher do that for you. It might seem like they're doing you a favor, but they're not. You'd be amazed at how you're treated when you politely, VERY CALMY, and friendly- call the people who want you to haul their product or the people who want that product and just talk to them. It's the difference between indifference.

Finally got a load. I sure hope freight picks back up soon.

    Load miles 794
    MT miles 463

Picking up in Tolleson, AZ 2/2/13 1900
    Delivers in Denver,CO 2/4/13 0600

Hopefully load is ready earlier. Don't pick up at this plant often(Tolleson). I was thinking I would go to our Cactus,TX plant being closer to Albuquerque but guess its slow out of there as well. Oh well more miles. I sure feel like I'm running on their western regional area. Hopefully I'll get out of it soon. 2500 miles is looking like a stretch at this point. Well going to fuel up and hit he road. Be safe out there. God bless

Took awhile to get here. Went to the Speedco and got a service done and a trailer inspection. Had a nail or screw in the tire so they patched that up as well. Took 2 hours but wasn't in a hurry and at the time I was trying to avoid having to do it at our yard in Greeley. But they sent me a pre plan as I was leaving the speedco for a pallet load that would be dropped at the Greeley yard. So guess I'll still end up having to put it in the shop.

Load was ready has been since about 3pm. Doesn't look like much parking where I'll be delivering so I'll just go up there 30 mins or so before my appointment time. Here is pre plan for next load. Not many miles but I'm moving so that is better then all of last week.

    Load miles 370
    MT miles 54

    2/4/13 1400 Greeley,CO
    2/5/13 0800 Grand Island, NE

It's a drop and hook load set my time to be available for 3am on the 2/5/13. If I can get another short run that's about 500 or so miles that deliver on the 6th. I think it would put me at the 3,000mile mark. More then likely though I'll only have the 2500 for the week if deliver date on next load is after the 6th.

Would like a load to the East coast, and then they can head me back toward the house. I have home time put in for the 12th so I can be in court on the 14th. Going to take my break hear at the plant. Probably use split sleeper birth. Anyway have a great weekend.

Decided to take the whole 10 this morning. Pulled the brakes with 29 minutes left on the clock. Was going to push it to the truck stop I wanted to stop at it was 33 miles away and I had 33 minutes left. So I seen a little fuel stop, and parked here for the night. Wish it was open to get something to snack on. Knocked out 629 miles today. 286 miles is all that's left. 1st time I hit over 500 miles all week. So far doesn't seem like I'll be doing that again in the next 2 days either. Anyway have a good night. Stay safe and roll w/Dino Mo later.

Made it to the Big D and I don't mean Dallas or Divorce:) Wanted to see what I would be dealing with in the morning so I came by the customer and there was a place to park. So I decided to go by the Pilot and get something to eat and a shower if I can find a place to park. Well got something to eat. But that Pilot is a joke. I think I need a few more years experience before I try to park at that place. I knew there was a reason I didn't like going there. I use to hate going there to get my trailer washout at the beacon. So Icame back to sit in front of the customer. Have a good night. God bless

Well a late update. Took forever to get unloaded. That place is a nightmare. I was like I don't ever want to come to this place again. Then I get a Preplan and one of my stops is the place I unloaded at today. Hopefully it will be better and not as many trucks. I finally got of there. Went to do a trailer washout at the blue beacon which has a trailer washout lane. That lane was blocked and had like 6 trucks waiting just to get in line. I went and asked the people if I could back into the washout bay. They wouldn't let me. But they went and got the people to move up so was able to get the trailer washout pretty quick.

Went to Greeley yard and could see trailer I was going to pick up. The security guard allowed me to pick it up without having my truck run through the shop. So that was good. Made it Grand Island got a nice hot shower at the Bosselman's/Pilot that place rocks. Then came and dropped off my pallets. Load isn't ready yet. Scheduled to be out at 1800. Going to be a tight run if Colorado Premium doesn't hold me up. I should be alright. Funny part on the Pre-plan in the notes section said NOT LEGAL. To funny.

    Pre plan

Loaded miles 909 MT miles 0

Pick up Grand Island, NE 2/5/13 1800
    Deliver Commerce City,Co 2/6/13 0700
    Deliver Denver, Co 2/6/13 0930
    Deliver Denver,Co 2/6/13 1200
    Deliver Ogden, Ut 2/7/13 0900

So we will see what happens. Earlier I had only about 14 hours left on the 70 but now that its after midnight I have 21 hours will be losing 9 hours tonight and real low numbers the following. Might have to wait until 2300 or so to leave if load is ready so I can make those delivery's tomorrow. Checked weather and that looks good. I know I'll probably be pretty light going to Utah. Also since this load doesn't final out on the 7th. Was stuck with 2500 miles. Well time to get some z's night night or morning morning.

Load ready just 2 hours past appointment time. I was expecting it to be later then that. Sitting here trying to figure out what time to leave. Want to get to first stop an hour early. Figuring 6.5 hours taking my time. I haven't been to the first stop in a long time so not sure of check in procedures. Thinking about leaving at 11:30 mountain time. Still have to scale. Load is only 37,000 pounds on paperwork. I feel like with 4 stops it should be heavier then that. So better to pay for a ten dollar scale ticket then over a hundred dollar overweight ticket with points going on my license.

I would like to get 3 drops off before 12 and then head toward Wyoming. 14 hour clock will be up at 13:15 since I'm going to start my pretrip at 2315. Well to those who are going night night. Good night. To those who are about to roll. Lets roll!!

Well made it to Laramie Wyoming with 3 minutes left on the clock. I'm going to enjoy this 10 hour break. Left Denver at 11. Only have 3 pallets on board. Glad its not windy or icy. (yet) Thought I would be getting better fuel mileage but that's not the case at the moment. Hopefully things will change. Well you folks be cool on your stool. I'm going to be giving the pillow some me time:)

Loaded out of our plant in Hyrum Utah. They first sent me a load going to the Bronx for Tuesday 2100 plus miles. I couldn't take it because I was due to be home on Tuesday so I'll make my court date on Thursday. So they gave me this Pre-plan.

    Load miles 1271
    MT miles 39

Pick up Hyrum, UT 2/08/13 2000
Deliver Tyson foods Sherman, TX 02/11/13 0600

Wow even Tyson buys our meat, and they are the competition. The fuel route has me going through the house. So I'll be home Sunday morning. Around 1 or 2 in the morning I probably wont leave till 2 am Monday morning. Then I'll dead head back to OKC from Sherman for Home time.

Load was ready at 1500. Ran into lot of snow in Utah and off and on in Wyoming. Then finally cleared up and it was hammer time. Wanted to make it to Limon, Colorado but I was going to be 5 or so minutes past my 11. So I pulled into the Loves not even sure of the towns name. On the East side of Denver. Had lots of parking for 2 in the morning. Well Going to hit the showers. I'll have just enough time to make it to the truck stop by the house before my 11 hours is up after my 10. If I was routing myself. I would have took a shorter route. But I won't complain not at all :). Have a good weekend, and God bless.
