I drive a 26ft straight Non CDL truck. The guy is paying me 28 cents a mile. I've been out on the east coast (Massachusets, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa)....Is .28 cent a fair pay? The truck is an automatic (like that part). All expedited freight......

The standard pay in expedite is a 60/40 split with the 60 percent of revenue plus 100% of FSC going to the one purchasing the fuel . If you aren't buying fuel you should get 40% of the gross revenue for all loaded miles .
The thing is most straight trucks require a CDL . You are getting close to cargo van driver pay . You should get your Class B and a fleet owner with a major expedite carrier will accept your experience .

I have Class A license.. The experience is the problem. Had my Class A CDL since 2001 but only drove for a beer company..So I was told to drive for about 6 months with this guy who's paying me 28 cent a mile then apply with a bigger company. So 28 cents is cargo van pay.. WOW..The straight truck is a 26 footer Non CDL truck....I kind of figured I was being under paid...Thanks for the feedback.....

It's not good pay but what they are paying . I was considering going to expedite until I saw the major carriers went from percentage to a flat $1.20 a mile . That is not good pay for expedite freight . You get less miles than truckload OTR carriers .

28cpm is standard chump change whether it's expedite or trucking.Sounds like you go to the east coast alot which should pay 10 cents more per mile.I think what companies pay drivers is a huge slap in the face. But if this is what you wanna do you have to accept the pay.

No , they don't have to accept it , especially in expedite . It's not that big of a sector of the industry . If drivers quit accepting that pay the rates would have to go up .
O/O's and drivers were foolish to accept the rate cuts and FSC discounts to shippers that started a few years ago .

That's the key word IF but how many drivers don't accept that pay?I agree IF drivers would quit accepting chump change the pay will go up.But for the few drivers that look elsewhere, that company has 10 other drivers waiting to take that one drivers place. Are you making good money where you're at?I'm not.But I have bills and needed a job right away.

Quite a few drivers and O/O's did leave the expedite industry but you are right . There will always newbies willing to temporarily fill seats for any wage . Right now expedite has been infiltrated by immigrants buying used Penske cube vans rated at 10,000 lbs. GVWR . They grab all the cheap freight they can get .
Yes , I am making good money running dedicated hazmat tanker but am looking at retiring . My wife and I looked at running expedite straight truck with the goal of getting a few trucks and becoming fleet owners . 40% of $1.20 a mile for an owner's share is not enough of a return on investing in a truck and maintaining it .
I'm just going to retire and work parttime , maybe not driving . I can collect $1600 a month Social Security and make another $15,000 a year and still collect full SS benefits . If I choose to drive I can make $15,000 in less than 6 months .
