Our bunk heater smokes when starting up and then shuts down. We took the truck to Thermo King and they told us we needed a service kit..which cost $200.00. my husband ask if they could tell him how to install the kit and they told him that you needed a special socket to remove the glo plug, which cost alot. So you have to have them to service the heater and pay them for labor.....Does anyone know that this is true?...or does anyone have any other suggestions?

What brand/model is it? You can buy the glow plug yourself and the tool is included. It is nothing but a socket with a slot in it to slip over the wires. It's almost like an O2 sensor socket which you can buy at any auto parts store.

Here's an Espar example, $156.27. You might have a Webasto which parts are a little higher. It's easily a DIY. I'm sure there are YouTube videos.

You can find your glow pin here

There is also a flame sensor with a special tool included for around $60

The glow pin socket itself cost $8.

The glow plug wears out slowly. That's where the flame sensor comes in. Eventually your flame sensor will shut the unit down if it doesn't ignite properly. It's a safety feature to keep from dumping fuel in there. That's what's happening to sweatpea. They don't last forever but are easily repairable with over priced parts. If anyone has worked on a gas or propane appliance they are about the same with a controlled fuel feed, ignition and a safety shut down sensor.

Condocruiser thank you so much for the info...Thermo king said it would cost $300.00 for the kit and installation. I would think the socket would come with the kit. If we can save money by doing it ourselves that would be FANTASTIC...THANX again :) Thank you also Ric Rabbit but it shuts down completely...

Some of the tools for oxygen sensors for cars works as well but as Condo posted the plug comes with the tool.

Is there a reset on the glowplug, some do and you reset it by pushing it in , you should feel the button under the rubber cover for the glowplug

When you change the plug you should also change the screen too. And the screen gets full of crud and can be a real pain to get out.

I have been getting "dirty" fuel around Buffalo and trapped my filters. I have a Webco thurmo but use a Kholer 4500 to run it. Hope it's spelled right.
