I have a problem with this statement, the average pickup weighing 7000lbs has a stopping distance from 60mph anywhere from 120-170feet. So please enlighten me how an 80,000lb truck is supposed to be any better?

Take a look at this web page

I am sure that if the trucker were here speaking for himself that we would then know the other side of this story....but we have heard from one side and by that I will say...thank goodness you were not hurt or injured....

I'd surmised the driver who almost killed you was only focused on the consequences if he doesn't get that load delivered on time. Tight delivery deadline schedules are the normal routine, and we truckers are subject to termination, suspension, and loss of pay promotions when we don't make delivery on time. Thus, some drivers forget about safety, when they know that blowing a red light may mean the difference between getting there on time, or arriving late. A lot of receivers will penalize us when we arrive late by telling us they won't unload till the next day; or if a weekend is coming up, they won't unload till Monday morning. In most cases, the dispatcher had already lined up another load to pick up as soon as the trailer is empty, so calling dispatch and saying "I missed my delivery deadline" means loss revenue for the company, and a driver seeing a smaller paycheck because he missed his delivery, which in turn forced him to miss his next pickup. There's no excuse for endangering the lives of other people, but when you have a government who believes in a Laissez-faire of not regulating delivery deadline scheduling practices, then these things happen once in a while. The fact that you had posted your concern on this forum proves it wasnt' your time yet.

Maybe he was from Puerto Rico where traffic light are optional after 9 PM and everyone drives 100MPH thru them so they won't get hit.
