Just fixed a problem similar to this. I took a set of united pacific headlights off and replaced with a identical set. Ended up with a test light wiring it back up. I still don't know if the plugs were wired differently or what? But I started out with the wires right back the way they came off?

sounds like its searching for a ground. i just had that happen on my classic. re did the plugs and replaced all the wiring coming out of the buckets to find that the x ground wire was broken and only on of the 2 grounds was still hooked up. spliced it all back together with shrink connectors and shrink tube on top of them to keep all the salt and crap out. easy test run a hot and ground wire to them. just cut the main feeds first. than hook up your sure hot and ground. use a heavier wire for the ground see if it still dims out the high beam. if it doesnt you for sure have a weak ground.

Sealed beam and H4 lamps are wired differently. I bought an H4 headlight from Daniel Stern and it came with a short adapter harness. You can also rearrange wires in a headlamp connector then you won't need an adapter.
