I hear people having problems with company driving tests. What do the companies ask you to do in their tests? What do people have trouble with?

When I was giving company road tests in Wisconsin.. if we held the experienced drivers to the same standard as we did our driving students.. we would hire maybe 5% of the experienced drivers...

The biggest problems newbies seem to have is calming down ! when a tester of any kind gets in the truck they immediately lose all composure. I watched a guy go thru school with me never stalled the truck 2 weeks of school never stalled it once. pulls out the parking lot with tester and stalls the truck !

It all depends on the company, some are stupid easy and others can be tough.

Generally it is a quick pretrip and then up the road to the interstate (if you're near an interstate) go up an exit and turn around and come back, you may have to back or you may not. I did one with the safety manager one time that took an hour and a half. He played with his phone through half of it and then fell asleep for the rest. Backing isn't usually hard as most yards have plenty of room.

If your getting tested come out and ask 'what are you looking for, from me' then do what they asked of you.

Company tests require you to get it right the first time . No repeated attempts like they allowed at the CDL mill . Obviously some carriers never asked applicants to put it in reverse .

Basically they wanna see how your turns are,if you can keep the rig in your lane, shifting and backing.Someone with exp don't have an extensive test like someone with little or no exp.

I am not worried. I did not go to a CDL mill. I did not even go to any school. I just took the written tests and then got in a truck. This ain't my first rodeo. I have just only driven trucks offroad. Driving on paved roads is easy. I got in the truck I was paying to use and the guy had me drive around and I did everything he asked the first time so he just told me when to meet him at the DPS. I am looking at a few companies now and some have driving tests. I just did not understand what the problem was. I had to back up on a graded road and even had to parrelel park that truck in a ten foot wide space. One of the turns was into a lane my car would be hard to fit in but I did not even rub a curb.

Put some cattle in the road that don't want to move. I can get them off the road without hurting them or scaring them. Now how many driving tests have that? (That was trying to be funny. But I can move cattle too.)

Now you did it . Get ready to hear all the reasons you won't get a job because you didn't go to a CDL mill . It's all BS . I can count on one hand the number of drivers I've known that went to a CDL mill . But then I've never worked for a bottom feeder carrier .
