Anyone have an idea about this:
The engine wont heat up to operating temp when idling in temps
under 32*F. It heats up if I drive it down the road but then
if its at operating temp 180* and i idle it for half hour 45 mins
it will drop down to 150 and no heat in cab plz help
replaced both termostats. And it has good circulation could it be the
water pump??? Also i havent seen the fan turn on since winter began
i run the north midwest US

I know not the same, but my Dodge PU with the Cummins takes forever to heat up at idle when cold AND it drops too if you idle long enough at cold temps. My PU runs at 190 when running down the road even in cold weather and I think it will drop to around 160 after idling for extended time. I have replaced both the T-Stat and WP before too, BUT I think that was about 150K ago.
I would think a bad WP would cause overheating, not over cooling?
Having not been around a Cummins in a big truck recenty I don't know if they run cold at idle or not?

I have same issue with my '98 century with detroit engine.Temp is normal while driving,and i have normal heating.When im idling temp iz normal,180, until I turn on the heating,then it drops to 150,still have heating but not as good as it is on 180

Idle it up when sitting for long periods. Long period equals more than 5 minutes. 900 rpm is good. Below zero up to 11 or 12 hundred. Diesels have always run cold at an idle. This is no new phenomenom.

I had same problem on my kw w900 but my thermostat was bad hate to say this but maybe u got defected thermostat ??

were the stat seals replaced also?if not,that is your problem.common to overlook replacing them.learned my lesson a long time ago.good luck. p.s. also very,very easy to install seals wrong.

Man I hate to tell you this but u probably have a burned head gasket no idle heat always turns out to be head gasket. Check if your have excessive pressure in the cooling system or if u have combustion gases present. You have a very small burn between be piston and a coolant passage on the gasket making combustion get in the coolant.

standard operating range for the N14 is 158 degrees min. and max is 212. put a winter front over your grill and should bring it up around 170 which is fine. N14"s seem to run around 175 in my experience.
