Glad I moved over to Poly Trucking

from what i can tell Poly is one of the better otr outfits, but they also have an ad in those truckstop magazines.

 

I also believe that they are a better company than most, but I wanted the capability of taking my better half out with me and that is a no no at Poly, otherwise I wouldn't mind working there at all, especially since I live in Texas.

 

I know of only one rag they use for advertising. I'm guessing that's only because they are looking to hire outside the DFW area and think that is less expensive than running ads in newspapers (that most don't read anymore) all over the country.

 

I've seen ads for OTR drivers in many newspapers. Many for the same companies that advertise in the truck stop rags. Just because a company or individual uses a newspaper, and not a truck stop rag, doesn't make that job more desirable. It doesn't matter the employer, do your research to make sure the job makes a good fit for YOU.

Farky, this industry has always, and probably always will, had ebbs and flows in freight availability. Which has the ability to affect a drivers pay. Some companies may be better than others at handling said situation. As a driver, or anyone for that matter, you must learn to live on a budget and build a savings to help you thru those lean mileage weeks.

Driving OTR is vastly different from working a local LTL gig. It's apples and oranges comparison. One is not better than the other as our economy uses both to function. What makes one job more desirable than the other is the individual looking for a job. What that individual wants to accomplish will determine which job they will seek.

Thats the main problem, a job. So many people settle for just a job. Try looking at trucking as a career. Then you won't settle for just a bad job.

And you never did address his comment about being paid for all of your on duty time. Tell me where you find that in a otr company?

 

OTR jobs have always been a "piece mell" pay structure. This has to be considered when deciding if it is the "lifestyle" you want with your career.

Local & OTR are indeed different segments of the same industry. OTR is a lifestyle, local is a job. It takes the individual to make either a career.

 

Trucking is a career choice just like any other job. No need to try and battle which is better LOCAL vs. OTR. It's like personal phone choices and phone carriers. You got to choose what works best for YOU! People get into trucking for many different reasons. Please don't assume what you do is best for everyone. There are two many things that go into all of it. We could Post hundreds of messages back and forth and get nowhere in helping someone else know what is best. Back up and look at the big picture before you Post things that may not be true. You have no clue why all those ads are put out there. You are reading and Posting on this thread and smack us in the face with your local job is better than our OTR positions on here. Big balls pal! Good luck selling that one to us. I'm happy your local thing is working for you. My OTR thing is working pretty good for me and that makes me even happier. We all can help post some things that may give others information to help them decide their career choices but at the end of the day they just gotta hope they do what's best for them with what they got to work with.
