Diabetes is caused by a poor diet not from sleep apnea nor is it hereditary if it is in your family it means you are more accessible to it IF you have a poor diet not that you will get it

I too had problems with the first one that i used along time ago.i went with out one for years and had some problems not using it. went to a differant doctor and had another test done and got another cpap with a differant mask, it covered the mouth and had nose pillows so it would not cover the whole face, and although it took a little bit to get use to it. I now cannot sleep without it and i am getting a good sleep and will sleep just over 6 hrs. during the week and on some weekends i will get around 8 hrs a night. My next step is to loose weight and get rid of the cpap..........

I use a Resmed S9 Elite. This device determines whether or not your airway is open while you're sleeping, and will reduce the pressure to either a set lower limit, or till you have an Obstructive apnea, and it goes back up. This cycle takes about a half hour to happen.

Here's some tips, for those of you who have trouble going to sleep with it.

FORGET THE RAMP. I found the ramp to be "useful" for about the first week or two. Then after that, I found it kept me awake, by making it feel like I was being slowly suffocated. Eventually, I found that I became used to either no pressure and no mask, or full pressure AND mask. That "mask on, low pressure" was impossible to tolerate. It made me feel like I could not breathe.

If you don't have a humidifier, GET ONE. And experiment with the humidity level if you can adjust it. I found there are optimum settings that make wearing it more comfortable.

Also, if you're having trouble falling and staying asleep the first couple hours... Go to a place that sells vitamins and supplements, and get SERETONIN. There's quick dissolve, fast acting kind, and you take it about 10 to 20 min before you want to be sleeping. It does NOT make you groggy, it does NOT make you wake up later, it does NOT make you hard to wake, but it helps you mentally relax and stay asleep for a few hours, naturally. It'll help you acclimate, by helping you go right back to sleep when you wake (everyone wakes several times a night, but then goes right back to sleep, it's natural sleep rhythm. After about 4 weeks of using your device, so long as the mask doesn't hurt, or the machine too loud, you will start falling back asleep without ever realizing you woke up.

And no, a CPAP is not a scam. It's a non-surgical way to sleep properly when you have an obstructed airway. In my case, when I fall asleep, my jaw and throat relaxes and it blocks my airway completely. For about two or three years, I lived with it quite bad without realizing it, but when I was unable to stay awake to drive 5 - 10 miles, and never saw a TV show (fell asleep every time), my wife insisted I have something done.

After acclimating to a CPAP, I started getting healthier and stopped trying to be sleepy all the time in about 3 months. Not just feeling better, but got my mental acuity back, memory stopped being so bad, started being able to concentrate, etc. And I wasn't tired all the time. Didn't even KNOW I was tired all the time until I wasn't.

Yes, you can die from OSA, as well as suffer myriad health problems, from weight gain to high blood pressure to strokes, impotence, etc.

PLEASE don't NOT do it. And lose weight. Some people are skinny with OSA, some get it from weight gain, some from age.

Me, I've already dropped 75 pounds, and have 80 to go.

For travel, there are several very small, convenient to pack machines that have exhale relief, pressure need sensing, and can be bought for under $500.

Mine had a list price of over $2000, but my insurance paid it. I no longer have insurance, so I'm looking to buy a travel unit on my own dime.

No, having high blood sugar is NOT caused by sleep apnea. HOWEVER, apnea can contribute to the things that do cause it.

Type II Diabetes, the kind where your body makes insulin, but doesn't use it right (I have it, I know it) is a complex thing, and has a reasonably complex cure. Well, not really a cure, but there's a very good chance that you can get your blood sugar to appropriate levels, live long and healthy, and not suffer the effects of diabetes.

If you're interested, I'll post more of it in the health section. I know more about now in less than a year, than my doctor knows. And that's really sad.

Really sleep apnea contributes to diabetes ? How it makes you stuff your face with cup cakes ? lol Sure you know more than your doctor (eye roll) Is that why he is your doc ? In 99% of diabetes cases it is cause by poor diet period !

If by "poor diet" you mean "having gained weight by eating too much, exercising too little, experiencing excessive stress", and a few other factors, then, sure. If that's not what you meant, then please don't say it.

I too am also one that has trouble trying to get used to a cpap. I have had it for a couple of years and just pretty much gave up hope on getting used to it. I am clastorphobic with things on my face or nose so that really doesn't help. The only thing that has worked for me some is to sleep in the recliner with the cpap going and it seems to go better so you might try that at home when your watching tv or relaxing and try to get used to it that way. Good Luck

I think Powerwagon was thinking Melatonin. Its and all natural sleep aid with no side effects. I have been on first CPAP then BPAP therapy for 11 yrs now. My case is considersed severe with 70-80 eppisodes per hr that I would stop breathing. This thing literally saved my life. That and I have RLS ( restless leg syndrome). Dr. gives me Neurontin for RLS and I use Bpap. I send in a memory card to my medical supply provider when its close to DOT physical time and they send me a very thorough readout to show that I am compliant to the Dr. doing physical. I'm more wide awake with more energy than before I was treated. Yes it was a B#### to get used to but man what a difference. Also for anyone, make sure you get the type of machine that has a heated humidifier. Your sinus's will make you suffer if you don't. Also like Powerwagon I think said, the ramp up part made me feel ilike I was suffocating. I go to full pressure and usually fall asleep in a few minutes. And if you sleep on your side your gonna be a pillow droller. Take care.
