Any drivers with advice on having a pet with you? I plan to drive solo and I think having my best friend/lab with me would be great. I'm not sure if the pros would outweigh the cons or not. Would appreciate some input. Thanks in advance

The only 'problem' we have had so far with our dog with us is when our truck had to be in the shop... We couldn't have our dog in their waiting room... It worked out we needed a hotel room, but if we didn't their suggestion was to secure the dog in the truck... Yeah, it's 20* outside and I'm going to lock my chihuahua in our truck ... NOT!! Thankfully I team, so one of us stayed with Buddy, while the other dealt with the truck.

I have a dog and when im otr she goes with me.Shes been my co pilot almost from day one.Would'nt do it without her.Companies do require a pet deposit which you should get back if you quit as long as the trk is in the same shape as when it was issued to you.I can't think of any cons because tiny my dog is perfect.

I NEVER truck without one of our pooches. And never would.
Shops have never bothered me really, and most places I have found very good where the pooches are concerned. We have 2 German Shepherds and a Husky, but the youngest Shepherd is the full time trucking dog, has been since 12 weeks old.
Had a "discussion" years ago at a plant where I was delivering a big oversize load for them. Guard said I had to remove the dog and tie him to a post outside while I delivered. I asked if it was OK for me to turn around in their driveway, as I was leaving with the load they wanted....
After about 15 minutes, they let me in with a promise I wouldn't let the dog out. Well duh.....This is after them sending a 2 axle yard truck out who thought he was going to take my load in for them. Didn't work out too well with a 2+2+2 trailer, that had me grossing out at @160,000lbs.......Idiots.
I think a lot has to do with what kind of dog you have too. I have yet to meet anyone that didn't like German Shepherds and Husky's. Should be the same with a Lab too IMHO.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm single with no real family and couldn't imagine not having him with me. Now I am convinced that he will make a great co-driver

The current truckin dawg, Axel, now and as a pup when he first got on the truck.
Skye, our husky when she came for a ride for a few weeks.
Our other black Shepherd Winston, and my old trucking dog, Tara, the long haired beauty who passed away 2yrs ago at the age of 16. Heart breaking.
Never be without one, and if a shipper/receiver doesnt like it, screw 'em I say. Although I have driven my own truck for the past @20yrs.....

Thanks for the pics leftlane. I grew up with German Shephards. Not a more loyal protective dog around. Sorry about Sara but 16 years is a pretty good life

Hello! I am currently a student in a trucking school program. My wife and I are looking to be team drivers (she is going to take her training this spring). We are trying to find a company that has a pet program. We are empty-nesters and are ready to travel but have a lab/golden retriever that thinks he should go with us. We agree! Any advice on companies that hire new teams and have pet programs would be very helpful! Thanks in advance for your help!
