Dump trucking proper sucks, some end dump jobs can be pretty good, though.

Dump trucking is extremely seasonal and very dependent on weather so keep in mind that almost no two paychecks will be alike. End dumps seem to be more steady, especially hauling coal but I doubt there are many coal haulers in NC. When I drove tandems and triaxles there would be weeks I would make $1000+ just to make $70 the following week, I couldn't take the uncertainty anymore. You never know when you're going to get off work, you will constantly be watching the weather and you'll probably be laid off dec-feb.

Around here in Mo pay is generally around 16-18 an hour to start but, I do know an outfit or two that start at 12-13, Benefits are non existent for the most part. When i was in Georgia the pay was around 13-14 an hour to start so I would expect around that since you are in the south.

Dumps can also be EXTREMELY boring. I've been stuck on haul outs for a month at a time where I would load dirt and dump it 500 yards away all day long. We also had a stockpile contract so if you got stuck on that you were getting beat to death in the quarry all day on a haul that was about 2 miles round trip.

Dump trucking is about as cut throat as trucking can get and boy can you tell, I would stay away unless you can land an end dump job.

***Also, almost every dump outfit I know of will train if that tells you anything. End dump outfits, not so much.

In nc there is a lot of dump work i think . Vulcan is all over the place (a quarry) hauling rocks of course. And sand haulers. The DOT uses massive numbers of them and a lot of that is private contracts. Those guys work hard and their job is insanely boring it seems to me. They dont get paid as much as you think but there are some old companies that pay their guys good. If you have schoool, class a, tanker, hazmat and want to run tankers you should be golden. Everything from food grade tankers to propane/chlorine etc hazmat to fuel. Right now as we speak if your town has over 20k people i guarantee there are at least 2 or 3 fuel tankers running about. Good luck!

Also check Florida Rock & Tank Lines; if you have a CDL they will give you tanker school. Two terminals in NC : Wilmington & Charlotte.

Can you get into a good tanker company directly out of school or do you need some miles under your belt first? Thanks

Thanks! I ended up getting a job here with Tidewater. It's been two months and I love what I do. Tanker is really working out for me. Glad I chose this over going otr!

    Doc,
Yes you can as long as you go with a good company. I've been with my tanker company for two months and I love it.
