Im currently leased to a company that charges me 10% but i find my own loads.I get 40% up front and if i turn my bol in by tuesday i get paid by friday and they also do my fuel taxes. So is it worth getting my own authority or should i just stay where im at?
Is getting my own authority worth it?

I have zero experience in the matter but I do have an opinion
If all you will gain is the 10% that you are now losing, then don't get your authority. You'll go broke.
I base this on having realized that everybody has their hand either out or in your pocket. "Getting your authority" will not change this for you, it will instead give you "the opportunity" to change it.
Right now you are under somebody else's authority. The authority costs money which you are renting.
They are "factoring" the freight bill for you. Paying you on friday when they may not get paid for 6 weeks or possibly ever. This costs money also.
They handle all of the billing, this also costs money.
You are probably pulling loads from a board "finding your own loads". If this is so, then who ever put the load on the board is getting paid, whomever owns the board is getting paid and this also costs more money.
If you get your own authority and keep paying the broker, board and accept the responsibility of billing and waiting on your money you probably will not save enough to come out ahead.
If you get your own authority, go find customers, extend them a line of credit, bill them, actually collect from them, and don't drop the ball or go broke in between then you will probably come out ahead.
I think anymore, to get your authority, and make a good go of it, you really need to be a bit of a guru and a lucky one at that.
Find the high paying freight that isn't being serviced properly and wiggle your way in the door with a price that will cover all of your expenses. This assuming you have 6 months worth of truck, fuel, maintenance, wages, all stashed away because you may need it before you get done.
Me, I just wanna drive and not go crazy... so authority is absolutely out of the question for me. -
im6under hit it right on..I would like to add this,,,(unless you have your own direct customers it is not worth it at this time)it will cost you around 15 to 20 thousand dollars to start own you own, that is if you get paid on-time...
