This has nothing to do with Obama, Wally, short miles have been the norm for many, many moons, or at least 35 years that I know of!

If I was in charge even cpm can be paid at the OT rate of x 1.5. Let's say a truck averages 60 mph which coincidentally coincides with a 60 minute/1 hour clock. In 40 hours he could drive 2400 miles. So set up a rule all drivers be paid overtime after 2400 miles. So if you get paid 36 cpm after 2400 miles you get paid 54 cpm. Fair is fair.

The biggest change I would like to see in trucking is how a driver is paid. But things are the way they are so everyone can keep tight reins on shipping cost. Trucking plays a big role on the economy and the cost of goods. Raising the cost of goods just one penny is more than enough to pay a driver fair wages and nobody would miss it.

no offense intended, but you sound like a typical politician looking to take more money from folks (just a penny wont hurt) and then they penny us to death

there is money in the present economy, as it is, and its being unfairly distributed to those with money (not socialism, but fairness) and thats the problem

adding more pennies wont help us unless there are systems in place to guarantee that existing costs and profits are properly distributed

i have no problem with an owner making millions (but if his drivers are starving, thats plain wrong)

anyone ever figure out where all the toll money goes?

You are missing the point of labor laws in place in this country and there are exemptions for drivers. We are no different than anyone else. We deserve overtime just like the next guy and I showed how it's possible.

The only thing you showed is how many miles a driver will get in a week and then set, till the next week starts. What will happen is Companies will hire an over abundance of drivers so no one will get but 2400 miles in a week. They will also get struck sitting in some truckstop instead of at home for a cpl days wasting money and losing out on home time. How long before drivers start signing papers agreeing to no overtime mileage pay...? not long!

All rates are figured on mileage among other factors. The problem with mileage based pay companies is you don't get a better mileage rate for a crappy load, you just get a crappy load paying crappy mileage rate! The only way it will change is if they eliminate mileage based pay and make them all pay percentage. But in the end it wouldn't matter cause drivers now a days just want to work/drive and they don't worry about pay till the end of the week!

Really, its a no win situation!

personally, i agree that ALL eloggers should be paid by the hour

from the time they get into the truck from home, till they are headed home (you are never really off-duty in someone else's truck)

guys with their own trucks should negotiate their own rates and conditions (individually or collectively)

I know of a company that pays per trip. You know what your pay is going to be when dispatched. It's in your best interest to take the quickest route, however you're not required to. From the company standpoint they are looking at what could be done to make things more efficient and slowly making changes. Takes a lot of renegotiating rates and moving things around to make sure that you're doing what is best for the company and the drivers.

if your getting paid by the miles you drive why would anyone not want to to get paid by hub miles you get paid for every mile you drive that means all the miles you drive were ever you go

    Nope....
Got a problem with HHG or Short miles, don't work for a company that pays that way. Problem Solved without the Government.

More drivers equal more trucks and more staffing. What are we talking an extra 100-600 miles at a premium rate. That's no more than an extra $100 a week. That would hardly break them.

If we got paid by hub miles there are always ones that would abuse it by driving the long way and such unless the hub miles were documented prior by some software. In the old day hub miles were paid by the odometer or hubometer.
