Veteran new to Trucking

    Hello everyone, retired 30yr USN MNCM(SW) E9 here, just completed trucking school (Daly's - Buford GA), and reviewing all the trucking opportunities out there. My God, so much to take in, so many different aspects to trucking that I never even conceived of. Not looking for hard core long haul OTR, at 52 and after 30yrs in the Navy, I've traveled quite a bit and only want to bring in some extra income. My priorities are home time, VA approved apprenticeship program, and pay, in that order. I live in North GA, so the Southeast is my area I guess, not reall into draggin tarps around anymore, but want to go tanker eventually, i.e. gasoline, chemicals, propane, etc hauling. Looks like all the companies doing that require (for insurance purposes) at least a couple years OTR experience before you can get on with them, so am leaning towards Roehl. They have an Ellenwood, GA Terminal, 2 hours south of me, run vans from there, and offer a 7/4, 7/3 schedule that gets me home for a few days every 7 )at least thats what they say). Anyway, looking forward to this new career, meeting and making new friends along the way, and if you have any good advice to steer me in the right direction, please let me know,

    You mean the Navy still has Minemen?
    You can still apply for tanker jobs. Several companies hire new CDL school grads for tanker work. Ignore the experience required & apply anyway. Mention your safety oriented job in the Navy as a MN. My last ship was USS New Jersey (BB-62), homeport Long Beach, CA.

    Roehl is a good company, that you mentioned. Schneider will send you to tanker school and so will Prime, but you will have to ask about the hometime; it will depend on who they haul for. Florida Rock & Tank has several terminals in GA also. Here is a list of a few tanker companies; look over the websites and apply if it looks OK to you. Best wishes.

    I think Prime has a pretty good sized food grade tanker account in Chattanooga . I knew a QC driver that got a lot of miles on it until Prime took it over .
    Apply at Eastern Seaboard Packaging in Norcross . They only have a few drivers but work a 5 day week , home every night except 1 overnight run that goes out to Mobile then over to Albany .

    Hey Shipmate, yes, they still have Minemen, about 900 of them. They serve on shore at the Mine Shops around the world, and at sea on the MCM ships and the new LCS ships. Had a friend years ago who served on the New Jersey, he really loved it. Thanks you for your service as well shipmate and thanks for the good tips and advice.

    Hello ! Airthug I too am a Vet only 9 yrs and wish to Thank You for Your Thirty Years of Devotion Thats along Time. Heres a TIP ! try Looking into the Civil Service They always need Drivers and it pays good home every night maybe once in awhile You might have a long run and they put You in a motel if its a long run (1 Day) to check on this look up Job USA, or check with the employment office near You for a listing of Federal Jobs you'll be right at home with other service men, I can speak from experience I worked on Camp Pendleton USMC at the BMT hauling a flat bed BUT we never had to tarp a load an we also had vans and TANKERS Hauling fuel to the stations on base and LPG trucks to fill up the storage tanks on base we also had US GOV Plates No scales to worry about blow right pass them Good Luck !!

    Okay heres what u go for. Linehaul pulling doubles/ triples u will be a good fit right age and it wont kill u. U will enjoy it. ABF, UPS, YRC etc. Retired Navy 28 years, AW/LDO. Send me a private message if u want more info.
