It's not hard. Just call on short loads and ask for it, regardless of what's offered. Quote the broker a rate. If they want it moved, they know they'll have to pay. And they do.

It is doable, but not on a regular basis. Many guys get into a "dedicated" mindset and then when they customer doesn't need the product anymore, they are lost and don't know what to do. I would love to do a 300 round trip load everyday but it just doesn't seem to happen. Even on the short 100 mile stuff these receivers are wanting you to deliver next day, not same day. In my eyes, that's double the rate.
SheepDog Thanks this. -
Exactly right. I'm willing to drop my minimum from 800 to 600 for a load that can be on and off my truck in 4 hours or less. But holding overnight always increases the rate.SheepDog and herfinharry Thank this.

Yes sometimes but if it was that easy the numbers you posted would be way better. I think your doing very well by the way so please dont take my comment the wrong way.

I think it would be fun to have a small group of Chicago/NW Indiana based contractors. In my opinion, there is a large amount of freight that moves from Milwaukee around the Lake and through to Grand Rapids or South Bend. I see moves with nice rates moving in both directions. I think a contractor could easily gross $1000/day without leaving the area or running many miles. Granted you would be putting up with traffic and you would probably have to unload and reload every day. You might not be in your own bed every night, but I am sure one would see the house a couple times a week plus all weekend. I think one could build quite a network in the area.SheepDog, SHC and herfinharry Thank this.

Flat or step?

Flatbed would be king in that area.windsmith Thanks this.

I do over a $1000 a day usually but, I deal with very little traffic, get home nightly(when doing one of the runs) and have $0 money out in tolls. Personally I'd want more money, but in reality its probably more than most actually make in that area.
