I started this thread about "My new truck will be,". Mainly a tribute for the people who have helped me to made me a well informed decision. But I do not want to repeat myself, if you are interested please read from the first post. The 10% can be reached with mew ideas, like 6X2, single wide tires, direct drive transmission, (okay it is rediscoverd), reduced truck and trailer gap, wheel covers.
sdaniel Thanks this. -
Yeah, it is usually a combination of the right things put together that can make a major difference. Just one thing like 6x2 may not pull off the wild fuel saving claims brought up. While I don't use a 6x2 configuration, I operate primarily in direct drive on the tranny at cruise speed, have the gap between tractor and trailer as tight as I can get it without going over on steer axle, am running wide based rubber, synthetics in all the boxes, etc, etc, etc. With that, I am getting high 6's to 7 mpg in the winter with all the wind and cold, and high 7's to 8 mpg in the summer months. And that is with 6x4 configuration with full lockers in both drive axles. Now the 6x2 might give me some extra, but I would be hard pressed to go places that I have to during the winter months. And since the truck stays up north all winter long, going to 6x2 is not a viable option for my operation.

A 7 speed was the transmission we used, because you are not turning a back box. And had 50 weight motor oil in them to reduce drag as well. 16 inch air gap between cab extensions and nose of trailer. Just a few of the tricks besides the drive set up. This will not work in a bunch of jobs. Best of luck!

I heard about the thin motor oil, but I think too risky to shy away from the manufacturer's set up.

They green lighted it for warranty . Tried to get them to green light 50 weight for the rears, but said that the shear strength was not high enough. ( think that was how it was worded) . But no warranty if we had did it in the rears, so we had to use gear lube in the rears.

Thank you for the info, I will do some research on the topic.

Not sure why you would use a 50w motor oil in a tranny when most are spec'd to use a 50w gear lube. Ideally, a 50w synthetic. Or did I miss something in your post?

Back then the standard was 90/140 weight , was 1986. Big difference between the two.

Well, the question is answered. Chevron just introduced the Delo 400 XLE synblend 10W-30 what is reach or exceed every manufacturers' requirements, and deliver 1% fuel saving and easier winter start. From now this is the standard motor oil at Kenworth. Probably not in my truck, since that is already built, but it will be in my truck from the first oil change.
