I know there are a lot of threads around this site asking similar questions, but....

I drove for several years, one year pulling dry van and then 2 1/2 pulling reefers. In mid 2008 I quit driving to go back to school. I graduated with a bachelor's degree and took an office job (that wasn't in my degree field, but paid decent) and I hated it. I hated being stuck in an office cubicle all day staring at a computer screen and talking to health insurance companies on the phone. Anyway, I'm looking to go back on the road and wondering about companies that will take someone that hasn't driven in 5 years. My driving record and DAC are clean, I've maintained my DOT medical card and my CDL, and I've never had a claim on a load. I'm also trying to decide if I want to pull a reefer or learn flatbedding. My reefer experience was mainly hauling frozen chicken west and then bringing produce from Cali/Arizona back to Florida. I know my options are fairly limited because of geographic location (western Florida panhandle), but would like to avoid places like Swift and Werner. My long-term plan is to be a company driver for a couple years to get back into the business, then buy a truck and lease on to a company, and eventually run my own authority after I get the business side down.

Over the long-term, which side of the industry would be a better money maker - reefer or flats? And which companies would be a good starting place for a long-term business relationship?

flatbed and tanker both pay well,Prime might be a good start for, being off the road that long you will have to do a refresher course. Good Luck.

You might want to try Butler Transport out of Kansas City KS. a friend of mine was out of driving for 4 years and they flew him out there, and did his road test and passed and went out on his own. So far he's been with them alittle over a year and said so far so good for him, plus its reefer van. (since you pulled reefer) (ps. never hurts to call to find out and no trainer again) hope this helps!

A good flatbed company is Melton Truck Lines.
In Eufaula, AL is a good reefer company that does Florida/West Coast turns; Benny Whitehead Trucking.
Kenan is good tanker company in Pensacola/Mobile area.

You may be required to do some formal CDL schooling; rules have changed in 5 years.
You can do online applications for these companies & I recommend you call them and ask what they will require for you to get back on the road. Each company may have different rules.
