I currently live down south and am planning to begin a career in OTR driving. I have had a CDL in the past delivering heavy equipment more or less regionally. It was an hourly job not a mileage paid job. I am hoping to find a company that gives reasonable home time but not excessively oppossed to being out 10 to 14 days if I can have at least a break of 2 or 3 days off to keep up with personal needs and business. I have not driven a rigg in over 15 years by the way. I am planning on going back to school to get my training again and obtain my CDL again since I let it go nearly 15 years ago.

I have acccess to the following companies that are nearby I am trying to learn more information about:

Knight transportion (like they offer 14 days on and 7 off also that they have a terminal in Lakeland Florida which I will most likely be relocating to in the near future since I have a home there and am in process of selling my home down south - like they offer option for immediate pay daily as runs are completed)

JB Hunt (like that they offer dedicated runs so I have routes I would get used to - not sure if they have a location in the Lakeland Florida area)

US Exress (like that they have options for regional and dedicated runs for you to eventually get used to your route - unsure of home time being anything more than 2 days at a time)

PLEASE HELP WITH WHICH COMPANIES I SHOULD CONSIDER STARTING OUT NEW! I need at least the option to make around $40K over a reasonable period of time.
Thanks for any help anyone can give in advance!!

Schneider is a pretty good starter company. I got my start there back in 2003 and all and all it wasn't too bad. I put my year in and been with smaller companies since.

With tanker I have to get hazmat correct?? Kind of nervious about the cargo being not stationery as in moving about when turning curbs and so forth. Is it more difficult to get used to that feeling or is it not enough to worry about?? Pardon my lack of knowledge just asking kinda of on what I think logically will be a little scary. LOL!

Hi Bookey and welcome to the forum.Remember this, what you hear and what a company actually does are 2 different things.Knight may have 14 days on 7 days off but that does'nt at all mean youll get it even if you apply for it.Same with regional.I learn not to look forward to anything and exspect the unexspected. It other words booky plan on staying out a good month untill the company actually tells you what runs you'll be doing.

Schneider, Prime, CTL, Florida Rock & Tank, hire new CDL drivers for tanker work. They have their own tanker schools. If you want to make over $40K starting out, tanker is the way to do it. After a few months you may be in the $60K pay range.

you don't need haz mat for all tanker jobs, but it's better to have it,more opportunities, the tankes have baffles in them to help with surge, but you still need to drive cautiously,we can all tip over.
