I am researching buying a used truck... I am forced to get something that meets the CA emissions standards, since I live in CA. Anyways I have been looking at the '08 and '09s and have been reading nothing but bad things about those years. So I am kinda screwed I guess... I looked at the 2010's and they go out of my price range.. I have pretty much decided on either a KW or Pete '09. What are the thoughts of the more experienced drivers. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. TIA
Looking for advice

If an 10/11 is out of your price range, then how will you beable to afford an 08/09 with the problems they are known for? Repairs are expensive and down time is even more expensive. Maybe it would be best to wait a year for the 10/11's to drop into your price range.
MNdriver, Studebaker Hawk and SmartDriver Thank this. -
I could probably get into a '10 Freightliner There are some with dd15 engines in them that are close to my budget limit. It is amazing how flooded the market is with '08 and '09s, I figured that was a good indication of something bad, and I had heard bad things about the '08s but hadn't heard about the '09s, in fact I had heard that the '09s with '09 engines and not '08s were better quality.

You have to be careful as some 2010 trucks have 2009 motors in them. The 2010 motors are better then the ones with the potato stuck in the exhaust pipe. You might need a 2011 truck as it seems they have some of the bugs worked out of them.

How bout pre-emissions engine(CAT) with a DPF ? I beleive that will get you by until 2023 or in the range. Then if it was me, I would drill some holes in the matter(looks like a honeycomb inside) so it wouldn't create so much back pressure. Just a thought.
P.S. What I meant by DPF is the exhaust/filter that goes under the cab. -
Yup. Make it look legal. Recent post on TTR indicate Cali hasn't started roadside smog checks.
