Seriously impact? I guess that's a matter of opinion. We dispatch a guy that has 25' and 35' trailers for his two trucks. It takes longer to find loads for him because of the length and weight restriction but we find them and they are usually above his operating costs. So, IMHO, it depends on what your preferences are.
There are loads we call on for my truck that we have to pass on because they are 48' but the weight is within tolerance.
There are several factors that affect operating costs. One important one is fuel mileage. We have found that our operating costs improve 5 cents for every mile per gallon we increase. That can be a big savings.
Much Success!

How many of you guys running pickups and flatbeds also add vehicles?

Anyone hauling for "Gary" HAS to take a car to fill the holes LOL. Not that he'd admit to cars making any money. Sorry if this is too troll like

Do you mind giving us your average fuel economy? Like, since you started, if you have that?

My two qtrs with IFTA have been 9.8 and 9.9. My best tank full was 15.4 going thru the mtns of TN. Did it by turning off cruise and keepiing my foot steady while going up and coasting down. Was hauling 12k. At times was only doing 35 with flashers on. I wasn't in a hurry either.

Much Success!

I grabbed two BMWs for $1.10 each going from Orlando to Savannah once. It's nice to be able to do that. We don't chase cars but if there is something close that will bring the rate up, we get it if it will fit
Much Success!

Thanks! I'm sure that the right Cummins and transmission setup will do better, though.

Dang, I'm surprised you got that kinda rate out of Fla with all the dang crummy brokers in the state! Well, not ALL are bad, but alot!

The right timing curve modifications, a 6 speed, or even the old 12 valve can always be made to do better than Chevy's setup. I know how to tune them, as I was in that business for more than a decade.

I'll apologize up front...don't mean to hijack this thread...but since you're already talking about it: I am considering the Dodge (maybe a newer 4500?) but need advice on transmissions; automatic vs manual. I've never operated many automatics in any kind of vehicle. I'm just very 'old school'. Honestly, wish we could get a 10 speed in these trucks!

Some of the issues: first is obviously fuel economy, followed by vehicle control (especially on grades), and of course durability. Would really like to hear ya'll's thoughts! (I'll look for the proper thread to re-post this question.)
