Newish Driver Looking for a Better Company!

    Hi Everyone!
    I have been driving as a qualified driver for 6 months, which I understand is the minimum requirement for several decent companies. Right now I am with Werner. (I KNOW, DON'T GET ME STARTED!) Honestly, they are not horrible, but I know they are at the bottom of the pay scale and have several other drawbacks, (But then again, what company doesn't have drawbacks?) So I am looking to make a move.

    A little about me: I have a clean MVR aside from 1 speeding ticket that is being pled down to a maintenance issue. I have HazMat, Tank, Double/Triple, Metal Coil, Passanger and Tow Truck endorsement. My dream is to have my own truck, but thats not an option because of my credit. Even my family is throwing threatening letters tied to bricks through my window.

    Obviously, higher pay is of first concern. But I would also like a company thats not going to stick me East of the Mississippi 9/10ths of the time (Thanks for leaving that out of your recruiting material, Werner.) I am comfortable with dry van singles, but am not necessarily opposed to refers, tanks or flatbeds. Would prefer mostly preloaded, but if the live loads are quick, i don't care. I'd like a company that works me like an cheap ##### in a Mexican border town (AKA LOTS OF MILES!) I am single, so hometime isn't horribly important as long as i have the option to get home every 4-8 weeks. I would KILL for a truck that has an APU, fridge and/or high capacity inverter.

    I have been considering lease-purchase programs, but am keeping ALL my options open. I am willing to wait until I have 1 year's experience (I know SEVERAL companies require this) but would prefer not to.

    Anyone have any ideas for me? At least something better than what i have now?

    Wait for that one year. It's like your golden ticket on to bigger and better things. One year experience and with the same company will show you actually know how to truck and shows stability. Hang in there. I know werner probably sucks, but giving it that little but will pay off in the long run.

    A good 48 state carrier with APU's is Melton Truck Lines; only require 3 mos. experience. Long established trucking company with good benefits.

    Quality Carriers is a good tanker company with 0/0 opportunities.

    System Transport, 48 states, Canada, Alaska. Has APU's. If you're not in the hiring area, use a friends or relatives address or get an address from a United Parcel Service Store, in another state, that has mail service.

    Greatwide has terminals all over the USA with many different types of trucking divisions and they have a good program to become an 0/0 or you can be a company driver.

    Morehouse Truck Line is a reefer outfit that has APU's.

    Navajo is a good reefer company, 48 state carrier.


    If you like any of these companies, ignore the experience required, and apply.

    6months driving & already wanting jump ship ! Lol ! you
    haven't been driving long enough to know that you haven't been driving long enough. talk to drivers from other companies and see what they are getting then when you have over 1 year make a move! for god sake don't even think about lease purchase or being a o/o for at leadt another year!

    So you want to jump off the USS Werner. Well, obviously before you jump ship, you need your next gig lined up. Where should you go? What kind of wagon do you want to pull? Start with the wagon and go from there. Since you want to own your own truck, I would recommend going with a company that has both owner ops and company so you can make the transition without having to jump ship again.

    Find yourself a good smaller company. Your chances of success will be substantially higher!

    As far as the leasing goes, give yourself sometime and get some experience under your belt. Once you have some experience you will know for certain that leasing is not an option. Leasing is not for experienced drivers. Its targeted toward newbies who don't know any better. Once you do have that experience you will know that there is very little if any profit margin in leasing. If you are a husband/wife team than that would be a different story. Team miles + all the income to one household will = a better profit margin! Even just leasing as trainer is marginal at best.

    So stick with the company driving and find yourself a good smaller mom and pop company. I think you will be much happier driving once you are making some good money out there and aren't under the thumb of a mega-carrier.
