The company I work for required me to purchase a cpap machine last year. Can I deduct this as a job related expense, or do have to figure it as a medical expense. Cpap is not a DOT requirement, but if I wanted to keep my job, my company required it. Thx

Cpap goes under medical if you itemize you taxes
-
You'll need about $3300 or 7.5% of your wages as a dollar amount to even have a positive deduction on medical.
Then you need a total of $5950 total deductions to even make itemizing benefit you. Otherwise just use the standard deduction. -
Smartest thing to have done would have been a Health Savings Account. Fully deductible off the gross.
-
as my accountant says you can deuct anything until your audited
many accountantants could make a case that cpap would be a job requirement
why ask truck drivers tax questions anyway
we cant even agree on what the green book says or doesnt say -
The reason I asked the question is already have met the 2% of gross income for work deductions (per diem), would not like to have to deduct for medical deduction if there is a 7.5% expense rule. I would not have the expense if company had not required it, thus I want to show expense as work related. Is there some stipulation in the IRS 25,000,000,000 pages to give an average taxpayer correct deductions. I feel no different since being on the cpap and feel it was just a company CYA requirement.

Ask an accountant.
Also, if you have health insurance with a high deductible, then the Health Savings Account becomes a possibility.
When you decide to take the expense as a job deal, remember, you are subject to preparation penalties, false return charges as well as owing the tax.
That is why I suggest you really talk to a local tax preparer, enrolled agent or CPA. -

Not trying to be rude, so please don't take me wrong. How can a company require you to have a cpap machine. How the heck do they know you have apnea. If the doctor says you have it, then it is a medical requirement. The company isn't really saying you have to have a cpap machine, but that you have to follow your doctors medical advise while working for them.

Their requirements said I fit the criteria for a test. Their sleep study company said I have. They said I need the machine or can't drive for them. Therefore they require it.
