For future reference, in the winter time, you need to apprise yourself of the weather situation across 40 NM/AZ, as well as across 10/20 NM/TX. I've seen bad weather across either while clear on the other. Then once you cross the mid section, there could be weather up north or down south. IMO, it all depends on the weather. If OK either route and your carrier is not stingy with tolls, 10/15/40/44/70 ... (but has tolls) but 40 to 81 ... is not terribly out of the way and has fewer tolls except Jersey Tpke

10, 20, 30, 40, 81 and 78. Lots of good places to stop along the way.

I-44 has tolls and I'm assuming you mean I-71 to I-76 to I-80.

We really need more info, where exactly is he going in NJ? Though either on I-80 or I-81, there will be rolling hills.

Well there's only 1 way out of Jersey with no toll that I know of and that's 295-195-295-95 into PA then go down through Philly to US40 to 301 south to US 50w, then 495 around DC to 66w to 81s then pickup I40w and run I40 all the way to Barstow then down I15 to I10 to Pomona. That's the best route I can come up with given what you're asking for.

look into entering jersey thru i80 or i78

most likely, i80, but if you are coming from the bottom, work your way up thru i70,

i personally prefer 301 thru maryland/delaware, one toll, but no traffic
