I ran independently between Swift and Prime and hauled many a CHR load. Lost my arse, too. I didn't like the headache of dealing with brokers. CHR, while one of the largest brokerages, is not the be all and end all.

    Huh? :dontknow:

My permits (at Swift) are $550/year, paid at $15/week until paid in full. My insurance, all inclusive (bobtail, liability, occ/acc, glass....everything) is $125/week. That's $6500/year. I do not pay for any load insurance. Where did your figure come from?

Might be more cost effective to just run your own authority, but it is also much more risky and complicated. For me, I'm kind of ducked under the umbrella of a large company for several reasons.

First, because I just don't want all the hassles of brokers, insurance, permits, trying to fill out the twelve page questionnaire every time I go with a new broker while trying to deliver a load on time, paying up the PrePass.....there's a lot of BS that goes along with running independent that I just don't feel like dealing with.

Second, I don't want to buy a beat up old used truck from the open market. I have seen first hand what happens with a lot of those. Celtic had three trucks. They all broke down beyond repair within a year of being placed in service.

Third, I don't have to worry about where my freight is coming from. That's not my problem. My problem is to haul what I'm dispatched on and accept, to get it there on time and as cost effectively as I can so I can line my own pockets. I don't particularly care what Swift gets paid for any load. I will be paid the same regardless of whether Swift takes it in the shorts or not. (For all of you who claim Swift and the other big players can afford to haul for pennies on the dollar.)

It doesn't matter whether to me Swift is hauling for $1.25/mile all inclusive. I will still get my (OTR) 92cpm plus FSC, which was 45cpm last week. That adds up to $1.37/mile. So if Swift is hauling it for $1.25 and paying me $1.37, I guess they're the ones who should be going broke. That hasn't happened yet in 40 years, so they must be doing something right. I'm perfectly happy riding those coat tails.

For the record, I did not take your comments as being negative. I am only showing why I prefer to run under someone else's authority, follow their BS rules and accept what they are willing to pay me.

Its not a passing gear, Mystic's just usin' that as a figure of speech.

On those England trucks, you can temporarily make the truck run over the governed speed limiter of up to 67 miles an hour by pushing the go-pedal to the floor and releasing it fully, three times in a row, ending with the pedal on the floor.
