2nd week on the road is going well. Not much to say about my instruction that's not already been covered. It's been a great learning experience despite really wanting to throw in the towel. To be honest it wasn't the training that was pushing me to quit. It was missing my family. The old saying of " you don't know what u got until its gone" really hit me. When I was struggling and get mad at myself. I would think about my wife and two kids at home and I just wanted to quit and get back to them. However, every nite I call home.. I would get great family support and they would encourage me to keep working hard. In the beginning I was so afraid that it was going to be super hard fot them at home. Turns out I was the hardest hit. LoL All that said I am doing great now.

Lets talk life on the training road..
Don't over pack !!!!!! A weeks worth of clothes is plenty. Just bring extra underwear, socks, and t's.
Bring your computer or tablets store some movies on there. There is lots of waiting around when you aren't driving.

My instructor on day one took me to Walmart and we went grocery shopping. He has his own built in fridge and he has pretty much let me use his electric cooler for my stuff.. I usually try to do Bfast and lunch in the truck and then try to have dinner at the truck stop for two reasons. It gets me out of the truck and it allows me "personal time" calling my family or to just decompress from the days training..

sleeping.... So far I have slept like a baby out here on the road!!! Granted the truck hasn't been rolling yet but, the reefer doesn't bother me at all..

In closing I am glad I stuck it out because this something I truley want to do. Now, if your are someone with a family thinking of giving this a try here is my advice. Make sure your family is behind you 1000% it will make life on the road easier. Second, make sure YOU are ready for the major life change. I thought I was a strong man before coming here. I have learned something far more greater than double clutching, or driving this beat down the road. I have learned that I am family man and with out the support of them this wouldn't be possible.

I suspect too that once they get on the road, they're focused on the work at hand and may not have wireless access on the road as Medic God mentioned. I'm hoping to start my own story as well, but unlike others...I do enjoy writing down my travels anyways, so it's not going to feel much like work for me. I have my trusty ipad with 4G, so I hope I'll get a connection in most places of my journey. Look for a new thread starting next week when I get on the Train to MO. Yes...you heard right, there was NO WAY I was doing 2.5 days on the Grey Dog after the stories I've heard! LOL....Amtrak it is...Watch for a new thread the weekend of 23rd. :Subway:

Hey Chattanogajimmie, when does your school start? You heading to MO for Orientation? Maybe we'll catch up for a coffee if you're there at the same time.

Don't know about you, but I'm excited to get going!

I'm from just outside Los Angeles. I'm leaving next weekend 23 Mar. Not going Greyhound though, going Amtrak. I just can't be bothered to mess around with the Grey Dog for almost 3 days...wow! We'll definitely keep in touch. I'm hoping to meet a few good guys who can be supportive with each other and keep in touch even after we get OTR.

That's a good point. WiFi access is very spotty, and unless you're parked right by the antenna at the truckstop - a very poor quality signal. Every truck that comes along breaks your connection most of the time. You guys are going to need to invest in an air card from a carrer that can provide real coverage - not just the fastest data rate in a large city if you want to stay connected.

Then we just may be at the same orientation lol. I really need to still get my CDL Permit before I go... But that won't be so hard I guess. I'm just so ready to get going and my some decent money for my kids ha.

Where is Amtrak taking you, there isn't a station in Springfield, I think the closest is St. Louis.

That would be cool. GO GET YOUR CDL permit buddy, before you come. My recruiter highly encouraged it. You'll be way ahead of the game and not have the stress that many of the other students will have when you arrive. They will all be scrambling to study for the CDL and we'll be out at the SIM or on the pad possibly practicing. It wasn't hard at all! I just went down to DMV, picked up the Commercial Driving Handbook. I read it from cover to cover. Then I extracted important points out of it and made little flash cards and read those for a few days. I had no problem. The air brake section was the easiest. The combination was easy too. The general was a bit tricky on a few questions. They intentionally made some questions very ambiguous and almost incorrect, I think to even trip up the students who have studied so that nobody aces it! But if you just put your Govt hat on when you go in there and answer the questions like you think they would, you'll have no problem!

Good question Sazook...was wondering who was paying attention. :) I'm going into a little town called "Sedalia". They have a stop there. Then I'm taking a small shuttle van into Springfield. It's not as cost efficient as the Grey Dog, but to me it's worth every penny if I can avoid the headaches of Greyhound. On the train you can at least get up and walk around for some exercise. You can go to do the dining car, or sleep under the starts in the glass roof if car is hooked up on that particular train. There is just a ton of added benefits of riding the train versus the bus. And if anyone has ever traveled by train, you get to see a MUCH different side of the landscape as the train doesn't follow highways and cars the majority of the time.
