I need some advise on my signature 600 in a 1999 peterbilt. I bought the truck a year ago and the guys I bought it from had just rebuilt it and I spun a bearing last week and not sure wither to rebuilt it or swap. Here is some background. The original motor in the truck spun a bearing #5 around 350000. Was rebuilt with new crank and ran around another 400000 and spun another bearing #5. This time they found a motor out of a 2001 and rebuilt it and put it in the truck and I bought it from them with hopes of having a good running truck for a few years but now 100000 miles later we spun #4 and may need a new crank. Is it to risky to rebuild it or should I rebuild and turn it down to 475? Anyone with isx600 experience let me know what you think.

Replace the engine. Metal gets everywhere after a spun main. Block is likely damaged. If you rebuild it, can you 110% guarantee you got all the metal out? No. Replace the engine.

It was a rod bearing and the crazy thing is that there was not alot of metal floating in the oil when we drained it. And none on the drain plug so I was thinking maybe it was not a bottom end problem till I pulled the pan and had pieces in the pan

What oil and filter are you using? Is it possible it could be over heating? Worst case, change out the rod bearings every 100k miles. Don't worry about metal, you have filters to catch it. If it's not in the pick up tube, it's in the pan. See if the crank is salvageable, maybe just try and replace the rod bearings on that cylinder. You have nothing to lose.

Rod bearing in these engines seem to be a issue when running high HP, I keep hearing this same problem. Or is it just a bad batch that got thru quaility control

We've had some rod bearings let go and really didn't damage the journal too bad. We polished it up and installed new bearings. Not the greatest way to fix it, but sometimes you can get lucky.

that many different spun bearings in that many different engines-- do you see a pattern here. low oil pressure, plugged filter, lugging, over reving. just a few of the things that could cause this. cleaning a jornal by crokets cloth is done if you have slight scratches. not on a spun bearing thats just taking a heck of a chance, these isx 600's were famous for this and seizing wrist pins. the newer ones not so much. if i remember there was a update on the early isx engines about oil filters coming apart and the debri going in the oil passages and restricting oil to certain vital parts.Last edited: Mar 15, 2013

I use the fleetguard/cummins filters and Delo oil
I've got the motor out and going to pull the crank on monday it is not salvageable because it spun coming off a good grade at 102,000 with the jakes on so till he leveled out he did not hear any thing start to knock When we pulled the pan the bearing was gone from in the rod
Will make a decision next week to rebuild or swap out for a 6NZ -
That or a Series 60. There are plenty that have excellent power with tunes.
