I know this question has probably been answered before, but here goes anyway. Where exactly do I report the amount on the W-2 for the Per Diem? It is listed on line 14 but I know sometimes that is just for informational purposes. Do I need to report it as income not reported on the W-2, or just keep it on line 14? Any help?

    Thanks,
    Kimberly

i've never seen it reported before. neither has my brother in law.

he never claims it. that's money you have to pay taxes on.

sucks that yours is reported though.

Are you saying that your employer is paying for all your meals on the road? They are giving you extra money besides your regular pay? Hmmmmm.
Oh by the way Barstow girl, I'm in Lucerne.

snowwy if you don't claim per diem you are paying a lot more taxes!!! Putting in your per diem is a huge deduction! To the OP if you don't itemize, it will not be listed.

ummm, i claim per diem. but it's also not listed on my w2. i get to itemize, and maximize my tax write off.

his is listed. which means he has to claim the additional income. and pay taxes.

Line 14 of the w-2 is for informational purposes only. The amount reflected on this is the amount of per diem that the company adjusted the income for.

So, when figuring the per diem for taxes for days out, you remove the amount from line 14 from it.

The company actually added that amount in to the pay, so we were actually paid, it was then separated and listed on line 14 on the w-2. All of the pay stubs list it as untaxed income.....so I am thinking I have to claim it as income that has not been taxed as of yet. I itemized all the actual expenses, but did not seem to get any tax benefit from them at all, so needless to say it is a bit confusing. The company has paid this money to us, so I feel it will have to be taxed :( Thanks

That sucks....my last company did 5 cents a mile per diem...but they paid it to me as a reimbursment, so I didn't have to say anything about it. was never on my W2, and it lowered my taxable income because it was taken out before they figured taxes. Add on the federal per diem of $xx per 24hr period on the road...nice chunk of taxable income taken out. :)
