About a month ago I was "educated" on the cost of money by one of these people. They pull a load from a broker that pays them $910 on a load. They can get it direct from the customer for $1100. But I was informed that I have no clue about business because the customer takes 30-days to pay and the broker he works with pays in 3-days.
I didn't even need a calculator to know that was in the 15% range (actually 17%). I didn't even have to take my shoes off to see that he is paying $190 to get his money in 3-days. -
That's one heck of an interest rate. 190 on 1100 in three days. APR of 2,000% interest! A non recourse factor would only cost him $55 at 95%. I'm glad I didn't receive this edumacashun as I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing. Actually, he makes me want to reinstate my brokerage authority.windsmith Thanks this.

I try not to haul anything for less than $800 to the truck, regardless of per-mile pay. Why? Because that load from NJ to Richmond will tie your truck up for an entire day, (and maybe more) and it's not really worth it for $425, in my opinion.

$425 isn't even worth it as is. Anything going less than 300 mi for less than $3/mi is a rip off.

The beauty of living in the United States is our ability to make decisions that work best for us individually and for companies to make the decisions they feel are best. Free enterprise baby, gotta love it. If you feel you must have $6+ per mile to move your truck and you can find someone to pay it, that is great. If a broker feels a need to move a load for $.80 per mile and can find someone to take it, that is great too. Everyone is making decisions they feel are right for them. Over a period of time if any of them are wrong too often, the will not be in business to have to worry about. No need for anyone to be upset with someone else
