Lot's of experienced drivers are out there ...... but I agree .. to really have 'bin there and got the t-shirt' I think you really have to have 'done' the big metropolis' ...... I've done NYC, Chi-Town, Montreal, Toronto, London (UK), Berlin, etc etc ..... I HAVE NOT done LA ....... but I figure I've done paid my dues eleswhere so I don' have to.
-
LA is tame compared to Chicago. At least LA doesn't have low bridge after low bridge waiting to end your career. LA just has traffic. Endless traffic.
NYC is easy. I've been there MANY times under my own authority. It pays well. And if you get a good paying load, you don't really care about how long it takes to drive 20 miles. -
True enough ....... AND it would AMAZE the in-experienced as to how many places there are in the 5 boroughs where you can park a big truck ..... and I don't mean parking to make a phone call ... I mean parking (legally) for a full day/night in the bunk. Some of my best sleeps were on W 33rd St in Manhattan and Monitor St in Brookyn

I used to run a dedicated route into the bronx from Ma. every night. I bought a new Garmin dezl truck gps about a month before I quit that job. Just for fun I tried the gps out to see how it would route me. It wanted me to take the Hutch Parkway into the Bronx.. Thank goodness I knew where I was going. Now...once I got to my drop in the bronx, which was on Brush avenue just west of the whitestone bridge, I tried the gps to get out of there. It routed me OVER the whitestone bridge to queens then do a u-turn and come back over the whitestone to 95. That woulda cost some poor driver alot in extra tolls just to get outta the bronx. And that was with the GPS set up for a 13'6 X 53' with 70' overall length.

One of the biggest issues, in my opinion, with trucks hitting bridges or missing road markings is that the industry is being over-run with immigrants that CAN NOT speak, never mind READ English! There is supposed to be a requirement that you must pass a reading test to obtain a cdl, but I have seen a great many new drivers out here that could never have passed that test. They are getting pushed through the system every day. No offense to Immigrants in general, just non law abiding ones.

Good posts Toadie. I'll comment on the whole GPS thing when I get back from work. Gotta go. You really from Granby ? I spent some time near you at Westover .... before that Devens, and Ottis .... as a firefighter. Springfield always used to have an amazing annual model railroad convention and swap meet too.

Yes Speedloader, I really live in Granby. Westover is a constant companion here with those C5 Galaxies scraping the trees in my back 40.lol.

The law in new york city is as followed::::: You can pull a 53ft. Trailer on any hiway in n.y.c. But if you get off any exit you can only have a 40ft. Trailer also depends on the size of your tractor some guys can pull a 42- 45 ft. Trailer, no 48-53ft. Trailers are NOT allowed on any n.y.c. Street without an oversize permit the fine is $220.00 and it goes in the drivers name, the city only enforces the rule when they need money, some known hot spots are 1. Triborough bridge(now called the r.f.k.) 2. Manhattan bridge, on both sides, when you come into manhattan on canal street and in brooklyn just before the b.q.e. Ramp 3. The van wyck expressway(i678 by the exit for the l.i.e.(i495) they get you good there because you have to go on college point blvd. To get the l.i.e. 4. The sheridan expressway(i895) at westchester ave. They get the trucks going for the hunts point market 5. On bruckner blvd. Service road, they get all the trucks coming out of the hunts point market, those are just some locations, so make sure your company knows what the law is, remember the ticket goes in your name , not the company, but like i said they do it when they need money, good luck...................

Is that supposed to be "not allowed" or am I not understanding?
