I am coming off of 8 years in the U.S. Army driving fuel trucks. I just graduated from Crowder college yesterday and am set to begin Orientation at Con-way on Monday. I have read a few threads about this, but they were all by the Conway boot camp people. Anyone graduated from Crowder have any insight as to what can be expected for the orientation, road test and backing test? Still searching the forums for these answers, but I gotta say this is a huge forum with tons of posts. Hope everyone is having a good day. JP

I can't answer your inquiry regarding the orientation practices of Con-way, but wanted to welcome you to trucking and the forum!

Think about putting that hazmat/tanker Army experience to work for you; that's where the money is in trucking.

Thank you for your service and welcome to Con-Way! Monday for orientation will be paperwork, whiz quiz, and probably a few speakers from various departments.

Tuesday I believe, you will have a road test somewhere along the way, they expect baby truckers to grind a gear here and there, just be safe!
Then a backing exercise and obstacle course, easier than Crowder because you will do a 45 rather than a 90. I don't know exactly how the days flush out because it changes, but you will do a Smith System exercise in vans rather than trucks.

Then, id cards, pictures, and wait for your finisher. Orientation is simple, just two things. Don't be late for anything, and don't fall asleep. If you do it there, they expect you will do it with a load and that means bye bye. After lunch, there are some boring lectures and full bellies. If you are getting groggy, get up and walk to the back rather than nodding, that is acceptable.

I am home now, heading out to find me a new student Monday, should be in JOPMO by next weekend or so, maybe its you!

Good luck, and thank you again for your service to our country.

Thanks for the info Roadrealtor. sounds a lot like schools in the army, feed you a huge lunch then death by powerpoint afterwards. I'm pretty sure I will have no issues with orientation, I just want to be done with testing. Been tested almost non stop the last 5 weeks.

    d o g Thanks this.

Unfortunately, all the military credentials don't cross over into the civilian side, even though I had to be DOT certified to transport/handle petroleum products.
