Hello, I am a 39 year man that hasn't driven class A vehicles since 2000. I worked for 2 companies, one a refer service for 3 years, and a tanker service for 2 years (plus 8 years driving 18 wheelers for the US Army Reserves). I have recently decided to get back into the trucking industry so I have gone on my own and gotten the DOT medical card and the CDL Class A learners permit. Now I need to know the next step? Going to a CDL training class for 3 to 4 weeks is impossible even if it is financed due to not pulling a paycheck for the schooling time. Is there any companies out there that will let you be a driver helper so that you can rebuild your skills (so that you can take the CDL skills test on your own) but still let you draw a paycheck (even if small) while you drive and or unload for a certified driver?

Hi there, I am pretty much in the same situation as you. I am trying to go with prime, they have you d week at there school then put u in a truck with a trainer and pay you $600.00 a week until you are ready to go out on your own .you should look into them maybe.

Over 12yrs not with a CDL will be hard to find a driving job to be honest with you. But you should check local companies around you in person. Just be honest and you would like to get back in the drivers seat again.

OK, that sounds good, question? How long in class? Your text got shortened? It just says "d week"? And how long is there contract?

Prime would be the best with no money up front & a decent paycheck while training.

If I'm not mistaken, Paschall Truck Lines will hire you and if you work for them a certain number or months, it's free, if you quit early it's $1500.00 , you go right out on the road within a few days of being accepted.

Another good one is Central Refrigerated; check their website.

Out of these 3 companies, I would start with Prime as a first choice & when you apply, check on the application if you want flatbed, reefer, or tanker.

You can apply online with each of them.

If none of this works, check with household moving companies such as BekinsA1Jobs about being a helper.

Sorry bout that. The way I understand it is you are at the school for 1 week where you get your CDL permit, dot card also work on backing and shifting you can draw $200 for the week. Then off with a trainer for around 6-8 weeks but wile your with the trainer you are getting paid $600.00 a week.then back to get your CDL then on the truck by yourself. I believe they want a year commitment. But I don't think that's bad cause even tho you have experienced you need some current experience.on the prime thread here there is a real good thread on what to expect at the school.

Yep, thanks! that sounds ideal... Can't find a direct point of contact with prime though? Everything routs me through their online app process. I will call if i have too, just not a big touchy feely person... But yes sounds like they have the best "launch to career" opportunity out there.
