Care to expand on that? -
Maybe they just assume you have it, i dont know. I do know they used to have the "K" restriction if you didnt show them a medical card and it limited you to intrastate only. Around 2 years ago they decided to make it mandatory to have a medical card to keep your CDL. I didnt have to worry about it because I had a valid card already but, I do know several people who went a got physicals to keep their CDL. I don't know if they were told by dmv that they had to or if they just did because of the new law.
When I moved to PA and switched my license over they never asked if I had a valid card or not but I do know you are supposed to have one if you are driving, so it must be one of those gray areas. -
In California, if you let your medical card expire, you are automatically downgraded to a class C license. You have one year to renew your medical card or you have to retest and do it all over again. I called the DMV twice and thats what they said.

i live in Illinois and have never been asked for my medical card at the time of renewal
my dad just moved from Kentucky to Tennessee and he had to have his medical card to keep his cdl when he tranfered his license from KY to Tn -
I called the DMV twice on this matter. In California if your medical card expires you are automatically downgraded to class C license. you have one year to renew your medical card to have your license returned to a CDL.

Very simple, it's about time that all jurisdictions tag your CDL with your medical so you don't have 2 carry 2 items when it can be done with 1 only.

Reviving an old thread but it is important as many States are making changes to their medical card requirements.
My 'home' state of South Dakota has recently changed its laws requiring that all new CDL holders have to keep a current medical card on file with the DMV and must remember to get a new copy to them every 2 years even if your license isn't up for renewal.
Any drivers issued their CDL before July 2011 have until Jan 2014 to get a current medical card to the DMV or their CDL is downgraded. They call this self certification.
Check your home state's CDL laws so you don't get caught at a scale and shut down. -
Florida has gone the same way. I didn't need my card when I renewed in 2011, but had to do the self-certify this year. This was done online at the state's web site by entering all the info from my card and uploading a scan of the card. Then when I "lost" my wallet (my 4 yo daughter had "put it away" while trying to be helpful) a few weeks ago and got a replacement license they required a copy of my medical card - even though they had an electronic copy of it available. Thankfully my license stays in my wallet, but my medical card stays in my logbook binder.
Oh, and the notice from the state that told me I needed to certify was just a small postcard. So, whoever goes through the mail at your place needs to be careful and not throw it out. -
Why not revive the thread on that topic?
