The ATA is not your friend. They are comprised of the largest shippers and carriers in the country. They lobby ( bribe ) congress for favorable laws to help themselves and screw everybody else.
Which organization helps truckers most? OOIDA or ATA

I've always been a company driver, but also a member of OOIDA my entire career. In my opinion all drivers; company or 0/0's should support OOIDA, by being members.

With the complete knowledge that some of you will go nuts over this statement--the truth is NEITHER--the ATA is a Professional lobby with an agenda--and it isnt about drivers--frankly it is absurd at best--and congress and the FMCSA see right thru it--OOIDA on the other hand has their heart in the right place--but doesn't have a clue to how things in Washington are actually done--they remind me of the early days of Motorcycle rights Organizations--Abate--MMA etc when they were still tryin to push the "helmets are dangerous agenda"it was laughable--and it wasn't until these organizations were properly educated on how to lobby--how to get things done--did they start to see results--The ATA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND--and OOIDA desperately needs a civics lesson--their arguments-to-courts--congress etc...are so Fundamentally flawed--they are typically ignored out of the box--the only real victory they have(and that really remains to be seen)is in Minnesota--and if you study that case it is only due to the Mn State Patrol's arguments being even moreflawed than OOIDAS
RickG, Panhandle flash and flash01 Thank this. -
OOIDA benefits themselves by selling overpriced services and providing attorneys for class action suits that individual drivers benefit little from .
OOIDA has been ineffective regarding HOS changes , unpaid detention time , lumpers , and other issues .Autocar Thanks this. -
And don't forget all the CARB bs. -
OOIDA has come around a lot in the last year or two. They have stuck by many long running lawsuits and won compensation for some O/O. Theyre services may be over priced, but are optional you dont have to buy them. They have finally started getting some congress members on our side. But they do not have the unlimited resources of large corporations.

None are for the drivers, its lawsuits and $$$ that drive them

Thanks for all the posts. I wish there was a better situation. Sounds like the OOIDA maybe the better of the two. I did notice in the speech that the ATA president (Graves) gave at the MC&E, was business not how we improve trucking jobs. There is only 324 views on it.

Thanks again guys. -
It really amuses me when OOIDA members say more drivers say more drivers should support OOIDA "because they are the only ones speaking for us " So ? What does that matter if no one is listening . Money talks and ATA and Teamsters political contributions are more than 10 times what OOIDA contributes .
